You don’t want to feed your dog a homemade diet over the long term unless you solicit the assistance of a veterinary nutritionist — nutritional imbalances are all but guaranteed.
However, if you’re really in a pinch and need to keep your dog fed until payday, you can likely put together a few doggo dinners by rummaging through your fridge and pantry.
A simple meal of cooked chicken and rice will fill your dog’s belly, and you could also throw in some frozen peas or carrots. You could also use cooked beef, pork, or fish as a source of protein, while potatoes or sweet potatoes would also work as a carbohydrate.
Again, you don’t want to do this for long (plus, it’ll end up costing more than kibble will).
But it can work in a pinch. Just be sure that you stick to foods you can safely share with your dog.

While your desire to save money on dog food is perfectly understandable, it is still imperative that you provide your dog with high-quality food.
That means keeping the following concepts and guidelines in mind when picking one of the most affordable dog foods:
- Only purchase dog foods made in the USA, Canada, Western Europe, Australia, or New Zealand. Foods made in these countries are subject to much stricter safety standards than foods made in developing nations. Pet food from countries like China may contain harmful ingredients and are less likely to be the subject of recalls, putting pups at risk.
- Avoid dog foods that contain artificial colors, flavors, or other additives. Good dog foods will appeal to your dog without these unnecessary and potentially harmful ingredients. Many dogs, for example, suffer from food allergies courtesy of the artificial dyes in their food.
- Good dog foods are meat-based recipes that list a whole source of protein first. For example, rather than chicken meal, good foods list whole chicken as their first ingredient. Probiotics

We are having a hard time finding a affordable dog food that doesn’t give them a upset stomach. My boyfriend is a great dog trainer and he has 5 to 6 large dog’s at a time. And while he’s working with them we have to board and feed them. Please give me a idea of what’s a good dry dog food for large breed dogs that is affordable since we have to get 10/50lb bag’s a month. We need some help please give me a idea.

Be sure to mention that chicken is oftentimes one of the allergy foods for dogs. How do you know? Oftentimes if a dog is constantly scratching at his ears is one symptom.
