Dog Beds for Older Dogs
Orthopedic dog beds have various features to make your senior canine snug and comfy in their old age. Some popular orthopedic dog bed features are:
- Memory Foam: Orthopedic dog beds with memory foam are highly recommended for senior canines. They help ease the pain of achy joints, and the stiff foam makes it easier for old dogs to get up after laying down.
- Warming Beds: Heated dog beds are another great choice for older arthritic dogs, as the warmth works to relieve your canine’s aches and pains. Some act similar to heated blankets and need to be plugged in, while others can be microwaved. Still others retain your dog’s own heat to keep them warm.
- Liquid/Stain Resistant As dogs get older, accidents become more frequent as bladder and bowel control deteriorates. Liquid and stain resistant dog beds can help provide a solution, so opt for an incontinence-friendly dog bed when available. Look for a bed with an orthopedic base, a waterproof lining, and a removable cover that can be taken off and washed.

My 12-year old boxer needs a raised bed and orthopedic mattress for her lower spine issues.
She sometimes has incontinence so we need something with a water-proof and washable cover.
She’s about 48 pounds so not sure if she’d benefit from the large or extra-large bedframe.
What do you recommend? Thank you.

My senior dog hates hot beds–sleeps on cold tile but has arthritis. Need a medium price ortho bed that’s cool to the touch. He’s a large mix breed – about 70-80 lbs. thanks

Hi Jen – I haven’t tried one of these, but I knew there were memory foam products for humans that had a cooling layer (sometimes gel, sometimes I don’t know what)… and it turns out there are also dog beds that have this feature. If you search for “memory foam” and (“cooling” or “gel”), you will see what I mean.

I would like the quality of the big barker, don’t mind the cost…but have a Cavalier King Charles and don’t need it as large…is there a smaller version of this better bed?!

Hey Wendy – Big Barker beds are designed specifically for extra large canines. In fact, they contain so many layers of foam that it’s really not appropriate for small dogs and could even have ill-verse effects! Instead, I’d suggest a different bed from this list – maybe the K&K Ortho Bolster? Good luck!

I have large dogs and 5 of them. Beds have always been a consistent and a price issue. They are getting older and one already has incontinence issues. However best I have found and swear by it are baby mattresses!! I got a 5inch memory foam for $39. Baby mattresses are water proof along with even more. You can also buy fitted sheets to take off and clean when needed as well. I will never buy another dog bed again!
