Fences keep dogs safe while allowing for untethered fun, but some barriers (like privacy fences) prevent your canine from seeing what’s going on beyond their borders. This isn’t an issue for every dog, but some pooches like to peer out and take in the view.

Luckily, there’s a solution if you’d like to give your dog a view, aptly called a dog fence window. And by setting up certain calm dogs with a fence window, you can provide him with canine entertainment as he watches the world unfold outside his yard!

We’ll explain dog fence windows, outline what to consider when searching for one, and share a few of our favorite dog fence window options below. We’ll also share some DIY dog fence window plans, in case you’d like to make your own.

What Are Dog Fence Windows?

best dog fence windows

Dog fence windows are small cutouts in a fence designed to provide a safe, escape-proof lookout point for canines. Installing a designated dog fence window is far safer than allowing your dog to shove his head through a random hole or scale the fence to see out.

Generally, dog fence windows feature a solid piece of clear acrylic, offering a porthole-like experience to take in life outside of your yard but still keeping your canine contained entirely in the yard.

This is important, as it keeps your floof safe from passing dogs, animals, and people who may harm an extended paw or snout.

Are Dog Fence Windows a Good Idea?

In some cases, yes! Dog fence windows can be a great way to spoil your pooch!

Dog fence windows break up the monotony of backyard bathroom stops and play, giving your dog a peek at life outside the confines of the backyard.

This extra splash of excitement helps fend off canine boredom and enriches your dog’s daily routine. A dog fence window can also aid in soothing anxiety, potentially curbing nuisance barking or escape-artist behavior in your dog.

Just understand that while dog fence windows can be beneficial to some canines, they’re also not a good fit for every pooch.

We wouldn’t, for example, recommend a dog fence window for pup’s who’re reactive to strange people or pets or engage in “fence fighting” behavior with other dogs. Adding one in these situations may only add to your four-footer’s anxieties and stress.

Dog Fence Window Considerations

Note that dog fence windows won’t work with every barrier, so consider your existing fence to avoid costly repairs. Typically, dog fence windows are best-suited for installation in standard wood fences but refer to a prospective product’s guidelines to be sure it will work with your setup.

Dog fence windows may also violate HOA regulations, so ask in advance to avoid the headache.

How to Pick the Best Dog Fence Window

Dog fence windows are generally similar in appearance and concept, but there are some aspects to consider to ensure you select the right product for your needs.

When browsing dog fence windows, always note:

  • Ease of installation: Generally, you can install a dog fence window yourself with a jig saw and drill. Instructions are also pretty basic and easy for the average DIY-er to figure out.
  • Price: Dog fence windows aren’t too pricey if you already have tools on hand. Expect to pay between $20 and $40 for most models.
  • Size: Dog fence windows come in large and small sizes with varying depths, so note your doggo’s size and shape before deciding on a product. A flat-faced pug may not mind a shallow window, but a mighty-muzzled basset may want more nose room, for instance.
  • Design: Most dog fence windows feature a solid acrylic bubble with a plastic frame. This design is ideal since it keeps your pupper contained and is easy to wipe clean as needed. Grate-like decorative cutouts aren’t meant for use as dog fence windows and shouldn’t be used as such.
  • Shape: Dog fence windows are almost always round, allowing for easier installation and a perfect fit for a pooch face. Circular windows are also easiest to clean, with no sharp corners to trap dirt and debris.
  • Hardware inclusion: Most dog fence windows come with the necessary hardware for installation, but double-check to be sure. Nothing is worse than needing to track down specific bits and bolts for a project.
  • Placement: Remember where you plan on installing the window to get the product that works best. For example, in sunny areas, a lighter trim may work better than black.

The best place for your dog’s fence window is somewhere he can see the action without being in the middle of it, preventing face-to-face shenanigans with passing dogs or people.

DIY Dog Fence Windows: Can You Make Your Own Dog Fence Window?

best window fence for dogs

You can opt for a DIY dog fence window, but it might be tricky. There are two methods most pup parents choose, with each requiring their own degrees of handiness.

Simple Install

The easiest method involves purchasing an acrylic bubble and installing it after cutting out your desired fence hole, but you won’t really save much money compared to buying a premade dog fence window since you’ll likely want to frame it out for a better look overall.

Complex Install

For a truly DIY dog fence window, you can manufacture a window using acrylic or, even better, wire mesh, a material that allows your dog to sniff all the great smells blowing in from outside the fence. Best of all, you can pick the window size that works best for your dog, though we recommend nothing large enough for your pooch to slip though, just to be safe.

Place your dog’s fence window at a height where he can comfortably look out without hopping on his hind legs. Not only is this more comfortable for your canine, but it also helps keep the window free of dirty paw prints.

To craft your own dog fence window, you’ll need the following supplies for installing in a wooden fence:

  • Marking pencil
  • Tape measure
  • A sheet of wire mesh or window screen in your desired size
  • Trim in your desired material and size (waterproofing is a must for wood varieties!)
  • Wood studs
  • Finishing nails
  • Capped nuts
  • Cutting saw
  • Drill
  • Hammer

Once you’re ready to build (and your doggo is safely tucked away,)

  1. Measure and mark the desired window position in the fence.
  2. Cut the window portion out of your fence.
  3. Place the wire mesh over the hole, leaving at least 1 inch of space around the edges.
  4. With a helper, install the mesh by drilling the trim into place.
  5. Smooth out sharp corners and test wire strength before giving your dog access.

Always test a dog fence window when you first install it, whether it’s a purchased kit or a DIY project. You’d rather spot a loose setup now than when you see the tail end of your dog slipping through it.
