Poodles are one of the most popular dogs in the US (The American Kennel Club lists them as the 7th most popular breed), and it is easy to see why: They are intelligent, affectionate, and enthusiastic pups, clad in an iconic curly coat. They typically become beloved family members in short order and they can live very long lives.
But not all poodles are created equally, and poodles come in a few different forms. The AKC recognizes three different types, but other registration agencies and poodle enthusiasts recognize two additional variations.
We’ll discuss each of these types, including a bit about their size and other interesting characteristics below.
The Five Basic Types of Poodle
The three AKC-recognized poodle types are listed first, while the last two are only recognized by poodle aficionados and a few other breed registries.
Note that the AKC regards all the three recognized variations (standard poodle, minature poodle, and toy poodle) as size variants of the same breed. By contrast, the UKC considers standard poodles a different breed than miniature and toy poodles.
1. Standard Poodle
The standard poodle is the largest form of the breed, and they stand at least 15 inches at the shoulder (most are between 20 and 23 inches tall) and weigh between about 45 and 80 pounds.
Although they are not that visually intimidating, standard poodles actually make pretty good guard dogs, as they are alert, brave, and protective of their owners.
2. Miniature Poodle
A mid-sized poodle by American standards, the miniature poodle is usually 11 to 15 inches tall and weighs 14 to 18 pounds. Although they are smaller than their standard counterparts, mini poodles have just as much personality, and they make excellent family dogs.
3. Toy Poodle
The tiny toy poodle is the smallest of the three AKC-recognized size variants, and weighs less than 10 pounds (usually between 6 and 9 pounds). The toy poodle stands about 8 to 10 inches high at the shoulder, making him perfectly pint-sized. These loveable companion dogs are sure to keep your lap warm!
4. Klein (Moyen) Poodle
There are a ton of Klein poodles in the US, but they are not recognized by the AKC as a valid size variant. The UKC treats Moyen poodles much like standard poodles, with whom they compete in dog shows. Klein poodles are akin to small standard poodles, or medium poodles, and most stand between 15 and 20 inches in height and weigh about 40 to 50 pounds.
5. Teacup Poodle
Teacup poodles are not recognized by most of the major breed registries; instead, they are an unofficial name breeders and poodle enthusiasts give to very small toy poodles.
There aren’t any clearly defined size guidelines for teacup poodles, but most dogs that enjoy the label are in the 5- to 7-pound.
We don’t generally recommend purchasing teacup dogs, as they’re often bred to be un-naturally petite, and suffer from a multitude of health issues as a result. Make sure to do your research before considering a teacup dog!
Poodle Colors
Poodles come in a diverse array of colors and combinations thereof. While multi-colored pups can be very attractive, they are not permitted by the AKC, who demands that poodles be of one color (the UKC does allow for multi-colored poodles). This isn’t too important, unless you plan on showing your Poodle.
Additionally, there are several regulations concerning the color of the eyes, nose and feet, which vary based on the coat color. Poodles usually have brown or black noses. They can have liver-coloured noses, though this is more rare.
Some of the most common poodle colors include:
- Blue
- Grey
- Silver
- Brown
- White
- Apricot
- Cream
- Cafe-au-lait
Poodle Care Basics
No matter which type of pet poodle you are considering, it is important to familiarize yourself with the type of care they will need. This includes understanding their personality, exercise needs and some of the common health concerns of the breed.
Personality
While the various poodles exhibit some differences in personality, they are all relatively similar. The first thing that jumps out to you about poodles is their considerable intelligence (they are typically listed among the ten most intelligent breeds). Poodles figure things out very quickly and are quite easy to train.
In fact, proper training is crucial for poodles, as they can run amok in your home if not provided with consistent, firm leadership and plenty to do. While they are usually gentle dogs, who won’t present the types of problems an untrained mastiff or Rottweiler may, you’ll be much happier with a poodle whose brain is occupied and who isn’t bored. These intelligent pups are fairly easy to train, but obedience training or training classes won’t hurt.
Poodles are quite affectionate with their families, and they are usually friendly with most strangers and unfamiliar dogs. Harsh treatment methods are not advisable with these sensitive dogs, and positive-reinforcement-based strategies work much better during training. This loyal breed bonds closely with his favorite humans and does not like to be alone for long periods of time.
A poodle is an excellent family pet so long as he is provided with the attention he deserves. Experienced and first-time dog owners could do well with the agreeable and playful poodle, so long as they meet vital exercise, grooming, and socialization needs.
Poodle Exercise Needs
Poodles are more athletic than many people would suppose, and exercise is an important component of their care. Whether you have a standard poodle or a miniature poodle, you just have to understand that they aren’t huskies, who must be given the opportunity to run to the horizon and back on a daily basis. But poodles do need the chance to run, jump, and play regularly. When it comes to daily exercise, you’ll want to mix long walks with playtime and other activities.
A few long walks each day may suffice for some, but it is always better to – in addition to a solid walk – give your poodle a chance to chase a frisbee or a tennis ball for 20 minutes or so a day. Poodles also crave mental stimulation as an incredibly intelligent breed, so you’ll want to have some puzzle toys around the house.
If at all possible, pet owners should give their poodles a chance to swim regularly, as this provides them with a low-impact form of exercise, and – most importantly – poodles usually love swimming. Poodles have fairly high energy levels, so you can expect these pups to be pretty active.
Poodle Grooming Needs
Poodles are famous for their fabulous coats, which are often cut in a number of different ways (see chart below). Some owners prefer their poodles to sport extravagant clips, such as the English Saddler or Continental cut, while others like simpler designs, such as the Teddy Bear or Kennel coat.

Even if you do not wish to keep your poodle groomed like a show dog and clipped in one of the fancy ways these dogs are often maintained, you will need to care for your poodle coat very regularly – perhaps daily with a regular grooming schedule.
Their hair must be brushed very often so that you can remove tangles and prevent mats from forming. Expect frequent grooming when welcoming a poodle or common poodle mixes. Many poodle parents commit to a daily brushing schedule to keep their furry friends feeling their finest.
One thing is for sure: You will want to foster a good relationship with a skilled groomer upon becoming a poodle parent. You can groom them on your own, but most owners will find it preferable to have their pooch groomed professionally.
Poodle Health Concerns
Purebred poodles are one of the longest-living breeds (particularly when considering the standard poodle, which lives for far longer than many other breeds of similar size). However, the poodle lifespan lasting 12 to 15 years, they are susceptible to a number of common health ailments.
Some of the most common include:
- Epilepsy
- Cushing’s Disease
- Addison’s Disease
- Gastric Dilation-Volvulus (Bloat)
- Hip Dysplasia
- Several different eye disorders
- Sebaceous Adenitis
- Patellar luxation (especially in toy poodles)
As with any dog, it’s key that your poodle stays up to date on his veterinary care visits. Keeping your poodle in shape with regular exercise and a balanced diet will also help him feel his best.

No matter which type of poodle you find the most appealing, it is easy to see that they are all great dogs, with their own unique beauty. As long as you can meet your poodle’s unique needs, they are bound to make an amazing pet companion. There are also plenty of adorable poodle mixes worth considering!

AKC does accept and registers parti and other color variants than solid. These dogs are allowed in all trials for obedience, agility, field trials, and sporting events, BUT AKC DOES NOT Allow them in the show ring for conformation. Some parti colors might be allowed soon. The parti has been allowed for many years in UKC and CKC conformation ring…

I have a poodle that weighs 5 lbs and is three years old she was a gift from my husband and she is the best dog I ever had. She is kennel trained and she is the queen of the castle I named her Cocoa Chanel and she goes everywhere that I can take her. Very smart and thinks our living room is a race track at times. She will make you laugh and then cuddle with you when you cry. I also got her spayed because she so tiny having puppies would hurt her and to decrease the chances of cancer. One thing I notice is no matter the size keep an eye on their teeth and brush them regularly. She is my baby.

I have three beautiful female toy poodles…Luna is a pedigree cream colour and is 10inches at shoulder…Misu’ is a pedigree chocolate and white phantom type at 9inches at shoulder….Mali is a pedigree black and cream phantom type at 10inches at shoulder….All three are affectionate, smart, active and the Greatest Joy of my Life!!! Prior to having these three girls I had Chelsea a jet black girl.. 10inches at shoulder and Georgia a red girl at 9inches at shoulder….they were a marvellous pair and I’ll miss them always and dearly…they both died at Eighteen years old with all their teeth and beauty!! Hi I have a standard Poodle we call him Cooper. Cooper is a real catacture, he loves nothing better than go play fetch all day if we let him. He is also really mistchevious apt to go through bins taking whatever he fantasies.
He is smart too if his ball goes under the furniture he will try his best to get it mostly he succeeds.
For all his intelligence it took over 18 months to house train him was very stubborn where that was concerned we got there eventually that’s the main thing Being a poodle I thought he would be a fussy eater Cooper however will eat just about anything that was a surprise to me. He really loves a long walk /run He has a wonderful cheeky personality loves to sleep with me and I feel very protected with him Cooper is my best friend and I hope to have many more years with him.

I found this page to be very informative. It has taught me a lot about poodles my baby girl is a standard with grayish black hair she’s so smart and loyal. I love both my twahuahua and my Poodle. They get along so good. Poodles are such kid friendly loving caring intelligent pets. They do require care because they don’t shed therefore it has to be cut at least 4-5 times a year or at least mine does but it’s all up to the owner how long or short they want their hair on their baby.

If possible, ask if they’ll provide contact info for the breeder. From that point, you could inquire about her parents and verify that they were not “teacups.”

I had 3 Toy Poodles who were triplets from the same litter. One male and two females. My babies were “party” poodles. Probably not recognized by the AKC since I didn’t see the coloring listed. Two were silver with white markings and one black with tan marking. I adored them! Each had a different personality and funny things he/she did. They lived to be 15. The l6th year I lost all 3 to CHF (congestive heart failure). January, then October, and the last one in November of 2017. I still miss them so very much. If anyone is considering a Poodle, you can’t go wrong. Just love them and appreciate everyday God has blessed you.

My mom has a Royal Standard who is the life of the party and has *everything* figured out at home and beyond. He’s a smarty for sure and very loving. I myself have a Labradoodle who’s a goof, an absolute love, a total princess, and just as smart as a purebred poodle! She’s my first foray into poodledom as I’ve usually owned chihuahuas and pugs. My mom, on the other hand, is a poodle enthusiast, having had many a teacup and miniature before getting her first royal standard six years ago. He unfortunately suffers from epilepsy but does well on his medication.

This article is so wrong! There are 3 just 3 sizes of poodles. Toy, Miniature and Standard. People who say otherwise are not telling the truth about poodles and I’ve had poodles since I was a kid in 1966. There is no such teacup poodle or any other breed it is a way to unscrupulous breeders to sell their puppies for a lot of money. Teacup size poodles and other breeds are runts and have health problems.

Short of getting run over by a car, GDV is the worst thing that can happen to a dog. Standard Poodles have a 1 in 20 chance of Gastic Dialation and Volvulus. Great Danes are even higher chance. Gastroplexy, tacking the stomach to the chest wall, reduces the likelihood (tho doesn’t completely eliminate it.) It’s a procedure that is relatively inexpensive and easy if done during spaying or neutering when the dog is anesthetized anyway. A dog is a major investment, not just in money but in emotions, and having lost one 3 year old Standard Poodle, I can attest to how expensive and heart breaking it is. All my dogs get Gastroplexy. It’s worth the extra $500 or so.

I sent my Stars to the rainbow bridge last week. She was 15.5 yrs old apricot toy poodle. We were fighting kidney disease for almost 2 yrs. fluids 3x a week and 5 meds. Her weight never went over 6.5# for the last 2 yrs. She was having problems breathing – during one of her fluid appointments – I asked the vet for updated x-rays. There was a significant increase of fluid around her heart. I agreed to pain killers and another 2 meds. 3 days later it was clear that the pain meds took all life from her. She stopped playing and eating. It was the hardest decision. I couldn’t keep putting her through all of Vet treatments, fighting her for her to take her meds and trying to give her a various of food – in hopes that she would eat. I so miss her. We are given a blessing knowing we won’t have them long. When Stars was younger I ensured she knew I was alpha but as the years passed – I permitted her to be the alpha. Smiles. I was happy to be wrapped around that little paw. Smiles. So miss her.

My mom had a toy poodle when I was growing up. I slept by the kennel every night for months until we were comfortable leaving her out all night. She then slept in bed with me until I graduated high school and moved out. My parents said she cried for me all the time. When I’d come home on the weekends she would go absolutely nuts. I have had tiny toy poodles since I was 10 yrs old. 3 of them over the years 2 blk and the last one white was 5.6 lbs who just recently passed. He was by far our baby boy to my husband and me. All my poodles lived till they were 18 yes old. He passed on his 18 the birthday. It’s been 3 weeks and I still look for him.
I am sorry I can’t leave a picture as he was really special and stole everyone’s heart. The first two passed away in my arms at 18 yes old…I had to fly out if the country for a week so his daddy looked after his and a fee hours before my plane landed he had crawled up to snuggle up with his daddy and passed away.
He was ckc registered but my females were akc. I hope he will come back again. He choose us when I picked him up he clung to me like his life depended on it. We had so many adventures and he rarely let me out of his sight unless his daddy was around. Everyone who met him was amazed at how smart and living his was. At least he didn’t suffer..just went to sleep with a smile.

Question: I have noticed that some poodles have got their snout with very short hair and others have got longer hair like a cockapoo…does that mean they are two kinds of poodles?

2/21/2019. Do not know when you posted your note. I have a black standard poodle, born 7/17/2017, spayed. Did not get papers, owner was breeding dogs for family pets, hunting dogs or service dog training for veterans, not for further. breeding or showing.
Knows sir, down, now, pray, bang-bang (play dead), and “army” crawl. She is very intelligent and learns quick with lots of positive reinforcements and love. Write if inter erested.

Growing up and through adulthood my mom and I were blessed with 5 wonderful standards from Jean Lazarus. The last one, Boni, passed away 2 years ago at age 17. She was with me full time as my mom passed away 8 years prior to that. I cant express what she meant to the people who loved her and she took care of in the later years of her life.

I’ve had Little Bear, my phantom miniature for 12 years, he was a rescue. I had my grandsons light apricot baby “Coco” but he passed a couple of years ago. He had been to the vet and kept getting worse and died in surgery. ☹️ He was only 6.
Just a couple months ago I got an over sized toy. He’s about 7 months now. All 3 have been males and the 2 I have now bring me so much joy. Smart as can be! (Waiting for chewing stage to end)
The baby has separation anxiety and I’m going he will settle and feel more secure.

Little mocha bean is 13 years old.and runs with my 3 Rottie mixes like he is one of them. Hates to be indoors. He is the most valiant dog ever! He is lame in the right shoulder following a fight with a Coati mundo, lame in the back left hip after a mishap with my car. 75% blind and deaf, Prostate touble, chronic constipation, COPD. With all that he is by my side no matter where I go on my 100 acre property. Fights snakes and scorpions, or so he thinks!
The drawback is the hair! I keep him sheered because of the weeds and thistles. He is a great little buddie! Measures 11” at the shoulders!

I have 2 standards a part I and a red, they are great dogs totally different in personality one is calm and gentle while the other is big boned and the pushy alpha. Your correct on finding a reputable breeder.

Odie our Roy accually was the alpha of them both and Kato my standard was such a sweet boy . We adopted a dog recently, did a DNA test and found out he is 50% standard poodle and 25% Chesapeake bay lab and 25% lab fo rat least 3 generations. He is 28 in tall and has fur that sheds. His temperament is a combination, but he is more poodle than lab. Is it common for puddles to be so tall? Are there tails naturally short our docked at birth? Thanks

Hi Kristina – interesting! The height is probably just luck of the draw depending on the parents. Poodle tails are not naturally short, they are often docked.

AKC does allow parti-colored Poodles in their registry. They do not allow them in the conformation ring but they are also allowed in AKC competitive sports like agility.

I recently lost by Shihtzu-Poo. She had diabetes, she was eleven & a half.It is very difficult. You are right about being Alfa, She was always telling me what to do. Hi, I have had 4 poodles since 1983. You qre right about the “Alpha” situation! But I didn’t know this when I adopted my current Poodle. She is a Black & white party color toy poodle. At least she’s always been called a Toy, even though she weighs 4 & 1/2 pounds! I alresdy had a 4 year old Bichon/Shitzu mix when I purchased Oreo. And not knowing any better, Oreo became the Alpha, and Sasha my BichonShitzu couldn’t have cared les!! Oreo is now 13 years old healthy, except for allergies that cause her to get ear infections and she just recently suffered from a detached retna which we don’t know how that happened, but we took her to a Veterinary opthamologist and she said that she has no vision in yhat eye noq, but she also has no pain & I put medication eye drops in twice a day.
Oh, I was told by a former dig shower at AKC shows that the AKC does acknowledge party color poodles now!
But I am now going to adopt a Double Doodle! A black female who was born today.

Although there are some who will refer to “teacup” poodles, that is not a recognized size—simply a term some people use for toy poodles.

Love poodles. We lost our two kids in the same month. Went to doggy heaven. Cujo, a red minature was fourteen, sweety, a salt and pepper toy was fifteen. They were our babies. Empty nesters now. We are both retired now and cannot afford the high prices to replace them. They were very. Spoiled lap babies. They owned us. If anyone has a runt or one they cannot sell, please let us know.

Your info is incorrect as AKC does allow and register multi color poodles. They can’t be shown in conformation however can be titled in all preformance events. I breed and show multi colored poodles and have several with AKC titles.
