We spent a vast amount of time and resources this spring raising our flock and lost all of it 2 hours on a random day. Very disturbing behavior so avoid pit breed if you want to keep your flock safe. Also, chicken wire is good at keeping chickens in, but bad at keeping predators out.

Hey there, R! Thanks for sharing your experiences. We’re glad your pupper and poultry learned to coexist well!

Wanted to share that we adopted a Jack Russel at the age of 8y, who had never seen a chicken in his life. We do have a coop with 4 chickens that is closed of from the rest of the garden. At first he was very interested in the chickens, trying to get closer all the time. But after a while he lost interest and then we let him closer (supervised). He once put his paw on one of the chickens and there was such panic in all of the chickens reactions and of course from us, so the dog really got a shock from it. We didn’t scold him but were clearly unhappy, and put him inside for the rest of the day (normally his out all day in the garden when the weather is good). After that, he can be unsupervised with the chickens all day long and nothing happens, they don’t even interact.. Fyi, this was over the course of +-2 years.
