Which support the unique health needs of smaller dogs through nutrient-rich whole foods. My dog loves this food. She goes crazy for it and has helped her maintain a healthy weight. We mix it with Freshpet.

Hey, Donna.

We sympathize! It certainly can be overwhelming to pick a dog food, given the myriad choices available on the market.
Ultimately, we feel that the vast majority of mainstream dog foods will be fine for the vast majority of dogs.

But, you do need to take a couple of things into consideration. We discuss the entire dog-food selection process here, but in a nutshell, you need to select a food that meets or exceeds the AAFCO guidelines for your pet’s life stage, as well as one that addresses any specific health concerns your dog has. And you may not like this, but we also think it is critical that you discuss your choice with your vet (if you truly suspect that your vet is placing his or her financial interests ahead of your dog’s well-being, then you need to find a different vet).

There are some other things you can consider to arrive at one of the very best foods for your pup, but those are the three basic things we think are “must haves.”
Best of luck!

There are so many out today, who knows! Each vet has different choices – usually the one they are sponsoring. I have an English Bulldog, cockatoo, shitz-shu and a Pomeranian. All adults. What should I be feeding each one? Thank you for your help!

Hey, Allegria. Glad you found the article helpful, and we sympathize with the chicken issue — it truly is one of the most common ingredients in dog foods.
We would, however, urge you to be cautious about reducing your dog’s caloric intake. That may very well be a good approach, but you don’t want your poor pup suffering from a rumbling tummy all the time.
Increasing exercise is another way to tweak the calorie-in-calorie-out ratio. Just make sure to keep your vet in the loop.
Best of luck!
