More and more owners are beginning to use CBD as a regular part of their dog’s care. Some are doing so in an effort to quell their dog’s anxiety, others are using CBD to help address joint pain, and others are using it for other reasons entirely.

The problem is it can be tricky to administer CBD oil to your pooch. Not only is it tough to get some pups to swallow the oils, but many dogs just don’t like the taste of CBD oils.

Fortunately, there is a solution – simply incorporate CBD oils in some homemade pet treats! This will not only make it easier to administer CBD to your canine companion, but your four-footer will also enjoy nomming on the tasty goodies!

We’ll share some of our favorite CBD recipes below.

First Things First: What Do You Need to Make CBD Dog Treats?

Before picking a recipe and starting to cook, you’ll want to assemble all of the ingredients, tools, and supplies you’re going to need.

The exact ingredients you’ll need for these recipes will obviously vary, but it’s a good idea to make sure you have some basic baking supplies handy. This includes things like flour, eggs, baking soda, and honey. Several of these recipes also call for dog-safe peanut butter (regular peanut butter sometimes contains xylitol — a dangerous ingredient for our pets), dog-safe yogurt, or pumpkin puree.

And, of course, you’ll need a good CBD oil for dogs!

In terms of tools, you won’t need anything too extravagant — just some basic baking gear:

  • A mixing bowl
  • Your favorite cookie cutter (preferably in a dog-appropriate shape)
  • Ice trays
  • A stand mixer (though many of these can be made without one)
  • An air-tight container or two
  • A good kitchen timer
  • A rolling pin
  • A non-stick cookie sheet
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • A flat surface for rolling everything out
  • An oven that’ll hold a good baking temperature

The Potential Health Benefits of CBD for Dogs: Why Give Your Dog CBD?

benefits of CBD for dogs

CBD refers to a substance called cannabidiol. This is just one of the many cannabinoids that interact with the endocannabinoid system, which is a series of receptors found in the nervous system of mammals.

Liquid CBD oil can be extracted from plants and safely administered to furry friends.

While the effects of CBD in dogs haven’t yet been researched extensively, there is a growing body of research that suggests that CBD oil may be beneficial to those suffering from the following conditions:

  • CBD for Dogs with Cancer: CBD, amongst other cannabinoids, has been shown to help reduce the growth of cancer cells in mice, though we still don’t know if it works the same way in dogs.
  • CBD for Dog Anxiety: Many pet parents report that CBD helps ease their dog’s anxiety, including separation anxiety. A human-based study found that anxiety was reduced for most patients after a month of use, but there’s still not much empirical evidence about how it affects dogs.
  • CBD for Hyper Dogs: There are plenty of anecdotal accounts that support CBD’s calming effect. CBD may be able to help alleviate some of your dog’s stress, but note that it’s important to focus on treating the source of your dog’s hyperactivity.
  • CBD for Dogs with Seizures: CBD has been shown to treat rare forms of epilepsy in humans. Some scientists have begun studying the effects on dogs, and while there aren’t any conclusive results, sources at Colorado State University report “promising results.”
  • CBD for Dogs with Arthritis: A 2018 study found that CBD could provide some relief to dogs suffering from arthritis. More research is needed to solidify CBD as a potential treatment, but the results are promising.

Will CBD Get Your Dog High?

does CBD get dogs high

CBD will not get your dog high. This is a common misconception since CBD is derived from cannabis.

However, it is just one of the many cannabinoids extracted from the plant. The one that causes a psychoactive effect is tetrahydrocannabinol (better known by the abbreviation THC). THC causes a “high,” but CBD does not. Instead, CBD is primarily thought to provide anti-inflammatory and sedative-like effects. Some evidence even suggests that CBD can actually counteract THC.

In short, CBD will not get your hound high, but it may be able to provide your pooch with a variety of health benefits depending on your dog’s needs.
