In this guide, we’ll explain what CBD oil is, how it differs from hemp seed oil, and the conditions it is thought to treat.

What Is CBD for Dogs? Will It Get My Dog High?

CBD is an abbreviation for a substance called cannabidiol.

Cannabidiol is one of at least 113 cannabinoids, or active ingredients, found in the marijuana plant. Cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system – a series of receptors found throughout the mammalian nervous system.

Different cannabinoids trigger different responses from the endocannabinoid system.

The most famous cannabinoid – tetrahydrocannabinol (better known by the abbreviation THC) – is responsible for causing most of the plant’s psychoactive effects. It is the active ingredient in weed that gets you high.

Other cannabinoids cause different bodily reactions. CBD, for example, is thought to cause a variety of anti-inflammatory and sedative-like effects. CBD is not intoxicating nor does it exhibit psychoactive properties. In fact, there’s some evidence that suggests it actually counteracts the effects of THC.

Accordingly, CBD oils will not get you or your dog high, but they may provide a number of health benefits.

Is CBD Oil Safe for Dogs?

CBD oil is a liquid extracted from hemp or marijuana plants. This oil can be harvested in several different ways.

Alcohol was formerly one of the most common ways to extract CBD oil. Essentially, the plant material would be soaked in alcohol, which would draw the oil out of the plant’s fibers. The alcohol was then allowed to evaporate, leaving behind CBD oil.

However, most CBD oil manufacturers now extract CBD through a complicated process involving supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2). The exact process is rather complicated and of little interest to dog owners, aside from the fact that it is widely considered to be the preferred method for producing safe CBD oils.

In either case, the harvested oil is often mixed with a “carrier oil,” such as coconut oil, to make it easier to package and administer.

Hemp Oil vs CBD Oil for Dogs: What’s the Difference?

When you start shopping for CBD oil, you’ll likely see a lot of different terminologies used. Some products may be labeled as hemp oil, CBD oil, and even hemp seed oil and cannabis oil.

Unfortunately, this creates a lot of confusion for first-time buyers who don’t understand the differences between the products.

We’ll explain all the terms in detail below, but here’s what you need to know:

TL;DR: Hemp oil is a type of CBD oil that’s high in CBD and very low in THC. Hemp oil is the type of CBD product you’ll want to consider giving your dog! Avoid hemp seed oil, which contains little CBD, and cannabis oil, which contains much more THC than hemp oil.

Hemp Plants vs Marijuana Plants: Similar, But Different

Marijuana and hemp are closely related plants, which are members of the genus Cannabis.

Scientists have described three different species within this genus:

  • Cannabis sativa
  • Cannabis indica
  • Cannabis ruderalis

In a nutshell, C. sativa and C. indica are both weed. They are primarily grown for recreational or medicinal use, and they contain significant (but varying) amounts of THC.

According to stoner lore, C. sativa is more stimulating and triggers more cerebral effects, while C. indica tends to produce a “full-body” high with sedative-like effects.

This is probably more-or-less true, but there are scads of differences between various strains, and Mother Nature tends to defy our attempts to put her work in neat boxes. So, take this bit of wisdom with a grain of salt.

Additionally, many commercial strains are the product of hybridization, which complicates things even further.

Cannabis ruderalis is a poorly understood species that is not grown in large quantities.

Some growers have, however, experimented with crossing this species with C. sativa and C. indica. Ultimately, the average pet owner can simply ignore this species.

This brings us to hemp.

Hemp is also assigned to the species C. sativa. However, it is primarily grown for its fiber and seeds, rather than recreational purposes.

During the process of selectively breeding the plant for this purpose, its THC content has fallen — significantly so.

In fact, to legally qualify as hemp in the United States, the plants must contain less than 0.3% THC (dry weight). This means that you won’t get high by smoking hemp plants.

However, hemp plants still produce significant amounts of CBD. Most of the compound is found in the plant’s stalks and leaves.

CBD Oil: AKA Oil Extracted From Hemp or Marijuana Plants

The term CBD oil refers to the oil extracted from hemp or marijuana plants. The oil is extracted from several different plant tissues, including the stems, flowers, and leaves.

CBD oils are rich in CBD, but they contain varying amounts of THC.

  • CBD Oil From Hemp Plants: CBD oils derived from hemp plants contain very little THC (trace amounts) and are widely available.
  • CBD Oil From Marijuana Plants: CBD oil produced from marijuana plants sometimes contains significant quantities of THC and is only available in states where weed is legal for recreational or medicinal use.

If you are trying to supplement your dog with CBD, you want to use a CBD oil with very low THC content. Therefore, you’ll want CBD oil derived from hemp plants.

Hemp Oil: AKA The Type of CBD Oil You Want For Your Dog

The term “hemp oil” is used to describe the oils extracted from hemp plants. As long as the oil was produced from the stalks and leaves of the plant, it should have quite a bit of CBD and relatively little THC.

However, some manufacturers use sloppy language when marketing their products. Instead of “hemp oil,” they’re producing “hemp seed oil,” which is a completely different animal.

Just note that oils derived from the stalks and leaves of hemp plants are typically the same thing as “CBD oils” made from hemp plants.

Hemp Seed Oil: Provides Nutritional Benefits, But No CBD

Hemp seed oil is extracted from hemp seeds in the same basic way that oil is extracted from olives, almonds, or peanuts.

However, hemp seeds do not contain much CBD or THC to speak of, so they’re primarily used as nutritional supplements, because they’re rich in several vitamins, minerals, and omega fatty acids.

Some people may wish to give their dog hemp seed oils, but it is important to understand hemp seed oils will not provide your dog with any CBD.

Cannabis Oil: CBD Oil That Contains THC

Cannabis oil is extracted from typical cannabis plants.

Its cannabinoid content will vary based on the strain of plant used to create it. Some have tons of THC, while others will have very little at all.

Cannabis oils that have lots of CBD will provide the medicinal benefits CBD oils provide. However, they’ll also get you or your dog baked if they have large quantities of THC.

This is not what you want for your dog – THC is not safe for dogs, and they don’t like to get high. While the idea of medical marijuana for your dog may sound appealing to those who personally enjoy smoking marijuana, your dog will not be a fan of getting high.

This type of oil is only available in weed-legal states.

The Benefits of CBD Oil for Dogs: What Conditions Does CBD Oil Address?

There is plenty of hype surrounding CBD oil, and the internet is full of questionable claims about the health benefits it provides. However, there is a growing body of scientific evidence suggesting that the oil does provide legitimate medicinal value.

In fact, experiments have shown that CBD oil may help those suffering from the following conditions:

But unfortunately for Fido, mice, rats, or humans were the test subjects in most of the studies listed above. The effects of CBD oil in dogs haven’t been researched very much thus far. But that’s starting to change.

For example, a 2018 study investigated the ability of dogs to absorb CBD oil administered in different forms. This doesn’t sound terribly exciting, but this kind of research is a crucial step necessary to eventually determine proper dosages. The results showed that orally administered CBD oil was more effective than topically applied CBD creams.

Of course, just because scientists haven’t collected empirical data showing that CBD oil treats a given condition doesn’t mean it doesn’t provide value. It simply means we don’t know for sure whether it does or not.

It is unlikely that CBD oil is the miracle drug some people make it out to be, but we probably will eventually determine that it is effective for treating some health problems.

We’ll discuss a few of the most notable health problems that CBD oil may or may not treat in dogs below.

CBD Oil for Dogs with Cancer

One of the most exciting possibilities regarding CBD oil is its potential to treat cancer in dogs.

Cancer is a serious disease that affects a large number of dogs (approximately 50% of dogs over 10 years of age will suffer from the disease at some point), so discovering that CBD oil can treat this typically fatal disease would be a game-changer for owners and their pets.

At least one study has demonstrated that CBD (as well as other cannabinoids) seems to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Most importantly, this work demonstrated that the effect occurs in petri dishes as well as living mice (many treatments work in the lab but fail to do so in living animals). In fact, there are other, similar studies that have yielded similar results.

Nevertheless, we can’t find any studies that have demonstrated the ability of CBD oil to treat cancer in dogs. But that doesn’t mean it may not be worth trying – especially if you and your vet have already exhausted traditional treatments.

You’ll just need to discuss the issue with your vet and make the best decision you can on behalf of your pet.

CBD Oil for Dogs with Seizures

One of the things that put CBD on the map, so to speak, occurred when scientists determined that it could be used to treat rare forms of epilepsy in humans.

In fact, there is now an FDA-approved CBD-based medication available to people suffering from Dravet syndrome or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (two forms of epilepsy).

Thanks in part to this work, some scientists have begun trying to determine whether CBD oil will provide similar benefits in our canine companions. This includes the AKC Canine Health Foundation, as well as Colorado State University. In fact, the Colorado State University researchers have already reported “promising” findings.

CBD Oil for Dogs with Arthritis

Arthritis is essentially a condition that occurs when a dog’s joints become inflamed – often from overuse. The condition is often progressive, and it can ultimately leave dogs unable to get around easily.

It appears that CBD may be of help to dogs with arthritis. There is a significant amount of research demonstrating that CBD may be helpful in treating inflammation, and it even appears that a combination of CBD and THC can help specifically reduce arthritis-related pain – at least in humans.

But as we mentioned earlier, THC is not good for dogs. Fortunately, a 2018 study found that CBD oil provided some relief to dogs suffering from arthritis. More research is needed before this type of treatment will become standard practice, but this is one of the most promising areas of research.

CBD for Dog Pain: Will CBD Alleviate My Dog’s Aches and Pains?

One of the most common things humans use CBD oils for is to reduce different types of pain. There is research demonstrating that CBD oil works in this capacity, but most of the studies have focused on rodents.

No studies (that we could find) have been conducted on dogs yet, but it will not be surprising if we eventually find that CBD helps reduce pain.

However, this still remains unproven, and owners are cautioned to speak with their vet about CBD for dogs before beginning a regimen to treat their pet’s pain.

CBD Oil for Hyper Dogs

Many humans take CBD to help relax and calm down, and there’s some evidence (including a pretty good rat-based study) that it works well in such contexts. Specifically, the researchers who conducted the linked study found that it helped rats faced with “inescapable stress” to relax.

Anecdotal accounts support this contention as well. So, many people consider giving their dog CBD supplements to help control hyperactivity.

Just note that hyperactivity in dogs can be caused by a variety of things, ranging from insufficient exercise to underlying anxiety.

So, while providing CBD oil for hyper dogs may alleviate some of your dog’s stress symptoms, it’s still wise to treat the root cause of your dog’s hyperactivity.

CBD Oil for Dog Anxiety (Including Separation Anxiety)

Anxiety is another problem that many humans use CBD to treat. And although there are a lot of questionable claims regarding the things CBD oil can treat, there seems to be plenty of evidence that backs its use in the treatment of anxiety.

As one human-based study found:

Anxiety scores decreased within the first month in 57 patients (79.2%) and remained decreased during the study duration.

There are other studies that’ve come to the same conclusion, and you can find countless anecdotes shared by people who’ve used CBD to successfully treat their anxiety.

So, while we don’t yet have empirical evidence that CBD will achieve the same effect in canines, it seems reasonable that CBD oils or CBD treats may be helpful in reducing your dog’s anxiety.

Just note that anxiety – like hyperactivity – often has an identifiable cause, which you’ll want to address. But CBD oil may provide a bit of immediate relief, which may even make it easier to correct the problem that’s causing your dog’s anxiety.

CBD Oil Dosage for Dogs: How Much CBD Should I Give My Dog?

Because research into the use of CBD in dogs is still in the early stages, a consensus regarding the proper dosage has yet to materialize.

However, one Cornell University study investigated the efficacy of CBD oil for treating osteoarthritis and produced some empirical data about the issue.

In the study (the paper is awaiting publication and peer review, but you can read a vet’s comments about it here), researchers administered two different dosages of CBD — either 2 or 8 milligrams of CBD per kilogram of body weight – to dogs.

The researchers found that both dosages were well tolerated, and no negative CBD oil side effects were noted.

This shouldn’t be considered the final word on the issue; instead, you should factor this information in with your vet’s advice and the dosing information provided by the particular product you choose.

CBD Treats vs Oils: Which is Better?

CBD products come in a few different forms. There are a few topical cremes or ointments available, but these don’t usually work very well for dogs. Instead, most dog owners give their pet CBD oils or CBD treats.

This begs the question: Which form is best for your pup?

It turns out that neither treats nor oils are inherently better than the other. They both offer a different set of pros and cons, so you’ll just have to discuss the issue with your vet and make the best decision you can for your pet.

To help, we’ll try to explain some of the key differences between the two types of CBD oil supplements below.

  • Oils will usually be absorbed by your dog’s body faster. Because your dog’s body won’t have to digest a treat to access the CBD, oils usually provide more rapid results than CBD treats. This is probably more important for owners using CBD treats on an “as needed” basis, rather than those who give their pet a standard, daily dose.
  • Treats are usually more palatable. Most dogs will take CBD oils willingly, and you can always add them to your pup’s food or water. However, CBD treats are usually pretty tasty, so they’re often easy to administer.
  • Treats are more likely to trigger allergies. CBD treats don’t cause allergic reactions very often, but some contain things like beef and chicken, which may trigger reactions in dogs allergic to these proteins. So, if your dog has food allergies, either stick to CBD oils or check the ingredient list of any treats you consider.
  • Treats provide more calories. CBD treats – like all other treats – represent a significant source of calories, which you’ll want to consider when trying to pick the best CBD supplement for your pet. A few extra calories a day probably won’t cause your 100-pound Newfie to gain a ton of weight, but a 5-pound Chihuahua, who needs several treats a day, may end up putting on an unhealthy amount of extra weight.

As with most other purchasing decisions you make on behalf of your pup, you just need to consider your pet’s specific, individual needs before making your choice.

CBD Oil for Dogs Side Effects: What Are the Risks?

Because very little research has focused on the effects of CBD in dogs, there isn’t a lot of information regarding the potential side effects CBD oil may cause in canines.

However, CBD oil has been known to cause a few common side effects in humans, and it may cause similar side effects in dogs.

Some of the most likely side effects your dog may experience include:

  • Drowsiness, increased sleeping, or lethargy
  • Dry mouth (“cotton mouth”)
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Tremors

Just be sure to keep your vet in the loop whenever using a CBD oil, and be sure to contact him or her at once if you notice any troubling symptoms.

Dogs and CBD Oil

How Long Does it Take CBD to Work in Dogs?

The time it’ll take CBD oil to work varies based on a number of factors – if it ends up working at all.

And for that matter, scientists haven’t yet conducted much research on the subject, so there aren’t a lot of hard facts from which we can learn.

Nevertheless, some of the factors that may influence the time it takes for the CBD oil to have the desired effect include:

  • The ailment you’re trying to treat. It’ll likely take longer for CBD to treat some health problems than others. Anxiety, for example, may respond to CBD oil in a half-hour or so, while it may take weeks to improve your dog’s joint pain or arthritis.
  • The severity of your dog’s condition. Generally speaking, it’ll likely take longer for CBD oil to reduce your dog’s symptoms if he’s at an advanced stage of disease. A dog with mild joint issues may experience some pain relief in a matter of days, while it may take weeks for a dog with advanced joint disease to enjoy the same type of benefits.
  • The strength of the CBD oil you administer. Although it has yet to be empirically demonstrated, it appears likely that higher CBD dosages will elicit quicker results than lower CBD dosages.
  • The details surrounding the way you administer the drug. Again, while maintaining all caveats about the lack of research, it is likely that food will delay the absorption of CBD by your dog’s body. So, if you’re looking for quick results, it may be better to administer it on an empty stomach. Just be sure to solicit your vet’s advice before you decide what to do.
  • Your dog’s individual traits. All dogs are individuals, with varying metabolic rates and sensitivities. This means that some will likely enjoy the benefits of CBD oil more quickly than others

What’s The Difference Between CBD Oil for Dogs vs Humans?

Cannabidiol is cannabidiol.

So, CBD oils for dogs and CBD oils made for humans should be the same thing. This means that — theoretically — you should be able to give your dog CBD oils intended for humans without problem.

But, in practice, this probably isn’t a good idea.

A lot of typically harmless ingredients used in human products are toxic to dogs. This not only includes some artificial sweeteners, like xylitol, but things like grapes, onions, walnuts, and chocolate too.

Some CBD gummies (and other edible products) may contain xylitol or grape-based ingredients, so you’ll want to avoid using them for your dog, or at least scan the ingredient list carefully first.

Additionally, many CBD oils made for humans have one more potentially troubling ingredient for dogs: grapeseed oil.

As already mentioned, grapes are toxic to dogs — they can even cause death in some cases. But unfortunately, scientists have yet to identify the exact compound(s) in grapes that cause canines trouble. This means that it isn’t entirely clear whether or not grapeseed oil is safe for your pet.

Some less-than-reputable sites categorically proclaim that grapeseed oil is safe for dogs, but this is definitely not a settled issue. The ASCPA notes that they’ve “yet to note any serious problems,” with the substance, but that’s a far cry from characterizing it as safe.

So, there’s no reason to take chances. Particularly with something you may end up administering to your dog over a lengthy period of time.

Besides, most CBD oils made for dogs are priced similarly to those made for people (and they’re sometimes cheaper), so there isn’t really a good reason to give your dog a CBD oil intended for human consumption.

Dog CBD FAQs

Owners often have a ton of questions about CBD, so we’ve tried to answer some of the most common below!

Can I use human CBD oil on dogs?

CBD oils for dogs and CBD oils made for humans are quite similar, and while you could potentially give an plain, unflavored human CBD oil to a dog, it’s not a great idea since the recommended dosages are quite different.

CBD oil for humans tend to come in more potent oils, making it difficult to appropriately dose your dog — who weighs much less than you and therefore needs much less CBD.

Plus, some human CBD oils contain sweeteners or other ingredients that aren’t good for your dog.

Instead, you might as well get some pet-friendly CBD oil and borrow some of your dog’s, since it’ll be safe for you too (although it may taste like chicken if it’s flavored).

Do vets recommend CBD oil for dogs?

Veterinarians are all individuals, so it is difficult to generalize the group’s views on something like CBD oil.

Some vets seem to embrace the use of CBD supplements and recommend them to their clients, while others don’t think that the supplements are a good idea at all.

Many are probably best described as being cautiously optimistic about the supplement, meaning that they are intrigued by the data and anecdotal information available, yet they will not recommend it to their clients until more research is conducted.

Statistically, a recent anonymous survey found that 66% of vets “never” recommend CBD for their patients, while 17% of the respondents reported recommending it “sometimes” or “frequently.”

It’s also important to note that vets – barring those practicing in California, who can now do so legally – are prohibited by law from discussing cannabis-based products with their clients.

In fact, only 45% of vets reported feeling comfortable discussing CBD with their clients (although slightly more — 61.5% — felt comfortable discussing it with colleagues).

But one thing’s for sure: Owners are certainly asking their vets about CBD supplements. In fact, 92% of those surveyed reported being asked about CBD supplements for pets at least once.

To be honest, we find this all pretty frustrating, and we’re pretty sure owners and vets would agree. In fact, while we don’t have any data about pet owners, but 82% of the vets surveyed wanted CBD supplements to be rescheduled (which would allow them to discuss them more freely with clients).

This would be extremely helpful, as the best possible way for owners to treat their pets is with their vet’s guidance. That’s why we strongly recommend discussing CBD oils and CBD treats with your vet.

There’s certainly no harm in asking, but your vet may not feel comfortable discussing the issue with you. This means that you’ll simply have to continue to educate yourself on the matter and make the best choices you can on your pet’s behalf.   CBD oil safe for Dogs

How quickly does CBD work in dogs?

We discuss this in more detail above, but how quickly you’ll witness the effects of CBD in your dog depends on a variety of factors.

For example, a dog being given CBD for anxiety may begin to seem more relaxed 30 minutes after CBD administration, while treating a dog for joint pain or arthritis might require weeks of CBD intake before any improvements are seen.

The efficacy of CBD also depends on the dosage you are giving your dog (higher doses are thought to bring faster results), the severity of the issue you are treating, the administration method, and your dog’s individual biology.

How is CBD administered to dogs?

Most commercial dog CBD oils are designed for oral use, although topical creams are also available. From a practical standpoint, owners should probably stick to products intended for oral use. The creams would likely be hard to apply through your dog’s fur and ridiculously messy.

Most oils marketed for pets come with an eye dropper or feeding syringe to facilitate easy dosing.

You can just squirt the medicine into your dog’s mouth or mix it in with your pet’s food. You can also add it to your pet’s water, but because dogs tend to splash water all over the place while drinking, some of the CBD oil is likely to end up on your kitchen floor, rather than inside your dog’s body.

Where can I buy CBD oil for dogs?

Historically, CBD oil was pretty hard to come by. Cannabis plants of all types were illegal to grow in most states, and they were completely illegal to grow from a federal perspective.

However, several states began decriminalizing or legalizing cannabis in 2012, which meant that some growers began producing and marketing CBD oils. Additionally, the federal government passed the U.S. Farm Bill in 2018, which de-scheduled industrial hemp at the federal level.

This helped to make CBD oil even more available.

Now, CBD oils – at least, hemp-derived CBD oils — are pretty easy to find. Some states still regard the substance as illegal, but most tend to look the other way.

Accordingly, CBD oils are now available via dozens of online retailers, dispensaries, health food stores, and even gas stations. But these CBD oils are primarily intended for human use.

And as mentioned earlier in the article, it is wise to purchase CBD oil that is specifically formulated for dogs when trying to treat your pet, like those discussed above.

Be sure to discuss the use of CBD oils with your vet before you start using one on your dog. CBD oil is likely safe for dogs, but it is always best to err on the side of caution and work with your vet anytime you consider using a supplement or medication.

Do you already use CBD oils to treat your dog’s health problems? We’d love to hear about your experiences. Tell us what product and strength you use, how much you administer to your dog, and what conditions you’re trying to treat!

The use of CBD oil for dogs is a relatively new endeavor, and your experiences may help other readers navigate these unfamiliar waters more successfully.

Is there a cbd oil mixture that both my dog and I can use? That way I only have one bottle sitting around. Also does cbd have to be diluted in hemp oil? Hemp oil, seeds and flour cause me to have bad headaches.

Hey, Barbara. There isn’t a CBD product (to our knowledge) that’s specifically designed for human and canine use. However, as we explain above, CBD oil is CBD oil — there shouldn’t be a difference between the active ingredient in various products. The differences relate to the inactive ingredients. There are CBD oils that utilize other carrier oils, but many use oils that may not be safe for dogs (such as grapeseed oil).

All of this is to say that you will probably just need to buy two — one for you and one for your dog.
