(1) No grain dog food is more expensive, (2) if you have the money for the trendy food, you are more likely to have the money to pay for advance testing from your vet, and thus (3) vets are more likely to identify a condition just in the dogs that eat no grain food even thought it might exist in all dogs at the same rate. Unless researchers have a biological causal pathway (i.e., we know what is going on in the dog’s digestive system) or are doing a random controlled experiment, then we really don’t know what is going on and everything is speculation.

I had two dogs that ate no grain food for over 80% of their lives, and they both recently died in the last year from different forms of cancer. The only reason they ate it in the first place was because one of them was an extremely picky eater.

Hey, Brian.
The concerns about grain-free diets, legumes, etc. only came to light in July of last year. And for that matter, as we’ve said, we can’t yet be sure that grain-free diets are causing DCM — just that there’s a correlation.
As always, discuss your food choice with your vet, learn all you can about the issue, and try to make the best decision you can on behalf of your pooch.
Thanks for reading!

The Boston Terrier bloats up and gets more gas than usual every time she eats and the Frenchie has a bad skin allergy. We tried several diets including raw chicken diet. What finally worked for both their conditions was the Buffalo Grain-Free chicken dry food. I now came against this article and I am concerned. However I do think that Lola’s ( Boston Terrier) quality if life has improved considering she is 13y/o. But I am concerned for my Frenchie who is still young.
