The experience of losing a pet isn’t easy – it’s one of the cruelest facts of life that we continually outlive our beloved dogs and cats.
Losing a dog is tough, but hopefully pet mourners can find comfort in these quotes about dog loss. While pets lives’ are temporary, our love for them is not.
Also check out our guide on how to deal with the loss of a pet.
More Quotes About Losing a Pet
“People leave imprints on our lives, shaping who we become in much the same way that a symbol is pressed into the page of a book to tell you who it comes from. Dogs, however, leave paw prints on our lives and our souls, which are as unique as fingerprints in every way.”
― Ashly Lorenzana
“If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I have known will go to heaven, and very, very few persons. ”
― James Thurber
Dog Loss Poems
A Dog for Jesus
(Where dogs go when they die)
I wish someone had given Jesus a dog.
As loyal and loving as mine.
To sleep by His manger and gaze in His eyes
And adore Him for being divine.
As our Lord grew to manhood His faithful dog,
Would have followed Him all through the day.
While He preached to the crowds and made the sick well
And knelt in the garden to pray.
It is sad to remember that Christ went away.
To face death alone and apart.
With no tender dog following close behind,
To comfort its Master’s Heart.
And when Jesus rose on that Easter morn,
How happy He would have been,
As His dog kissed His hand and barked it’s delight,
For The One who died for all men.
Well, the Lord has a dog now, I just sent Him mine,
The old pal so dear to me.
And I smile through my tears on this first day alone,
Knowing they’re in eternity.
Day after day, the whole day through,
Wherever my road inclined,
Four feet said, “Wait, I’m coming with you!”
And trotted along behind.
– Rudyard Kipling
Missing You
I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying. You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
“It’s me, I haven’t left you, I’m well, I’m fine, I’m here.”
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today. Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I’m not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said “It’s me.”
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It’s possible for me to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, “I never went away.”
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew…
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over… I smile and watch you yawning
and say “Good-night, God bless, I’ll see you in the morning.”
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I’ll rush across to greet you and we’ll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out… then come home to be with me.
– Colleen Fitzsimmons
Knowing
If I had known that on that day our time was near the end
I would have done things differently, my forever friend.
I would have stayed right next to you deep into the night
but I thought I’d see you in the early morning light.
And so I said “Good night” to you as I walked in through the door
never thinking of the time when I’d see you no more.
But if I had known that on that day our time was at the end
I would have done things so differently, my forever friend.
– Sally Evans (written for Shoo-Fly)
The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies
that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm
and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health
and vigour; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and
looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs
carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your
special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your
life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together

A Man and his Dog
A man and his dog were walking along a road.
The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him
that he was dead.
He remembered dying and that his dog had been dead for years.
He wondered where the road was leading them.
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of
the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken
by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.
When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch
that looked like mother of pearl and the street that led to the gate
looked like pure gold.
He and the dog walked toward the gate and as they got closer, they
saw a man at a desk to one side. When they were close enough,
he called out, “Excuse me, where are we?”
“This is heaven, sir,” the man answered.
“Wow! Would you happen to have some water?” the traveler asked.
“Of course, sir. Come right in, I’ll have some ice water sent right up.”
The man gestured and the gate began to open.
“Can my friend,” gesturing toward the dog, “come in too?” the traveler asked.
“I’m sorry, sir, but we don’t accept pets.”
The man thought for a moment, and then, turning back towards the road,
continued the way they had been going.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, they came to
a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed.
There was no fence. As they approached the gate, he saw a man inside,
leaning against a tree and reading a book.
“Excuse me!” he called to the reader. “Do you have any water?”
“Yeah, sure, there’s a pump over there”. The man pointed to a place that
couldn’t be seen from outside the gate. “Come on in.”
“How about my friend here?”. The traveler said, gesturing to the dog.
“There should be a bowl by the pump” said the man.
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an
old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.
The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink, then gave some to the dog.
When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man
who was standing by the tree waiting for them.
“What do you call this place?” the traveler asked.
“This is heaven,” was the answer.”
“Well, that’s confusing,” the traveler said. “The man down the
road said that was heaven, too.”
“Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and the pearly gates?
Nope, that’s hell.”
“Doesn’t it make you mad for them to use your name like that?”
“Nope, I can see how you might think so, but we’re just happy
that they screen out the folks who’ll leave their best friends behind.”

Having a dog and getting close to that dog and the love shared is everything we would want to give and to get from the world – a dog is like a Zen master if you pay attention – and love never dies and tears will come oh yes they will – but death? all the dogs I have ever had are still alive right inside my soul = the essence of what ever god is – and when I leave here – most of my wisdom and lessons learned about true love will have come from the collective soul of all the dogs that came here to love me – teach me – reach me. I might have fed them and paid their bills, but it is me who is in their debt for what they have given me and how my soul has grown. And I marvel at the times I look back and see where I wronged a dog – and of course it teaches how I wronged other people – and dogs are like a life review before you even die. If you look deep into the truth of what they always showed, you. I have learned that out of everything – dogs were the thing to really never take for granted – regarding how to find enlightenment and compassion and patience in all directions.

Her name is Chloe, and she was the light of our lives. Our hearts are so broken and life is silent and empty without her. Please pray for us.

My boston who was 14 yrs and 9 months passed yesterday she waited to say good bye to me I have given her a full life I have taken her to the beach hundreds of times taken her to the dog park hundreds of times but I also neglected her a little when she became a senior because of her limitations and that is where I went wrong. I took her to the dog park last month and she loved it even though she was limited she just love being there. She was everything to me I wish I had more time to make it right I understand dogs don’t live forever but I wish I had just one more month with her to show her how much I loved her.

I mourn for every one here who has lost a dog. e know they will not live forever yet we are NEVER ready to let them go My little lab died 15 months ago right in front of me as her spleen ruptured I did and STILL do find peace that I will see her in Heaven on the other side of “Rainbow Bridge’ The blazing idiot who just had to post “SORRY, FOLKS” as no dogs in Heaven so says the King James Version. What does it say about sarcastic donkeys like yourself??? Cannot help but wondering! Again, my thoughts, prayers, sorrow and love to all missing a pet waiting on the other side.

We just lost our yellow mixed lab, Bo, 15 years old, yesterday. The grief is overwhelming. I know with time the sadness will change into warm memories and we will see him in heaven some day when Our God call US home.

without love there would be no pain. how great must your love have been to be able to feel great pain. Your beloved fur-friend might want you to share that love. perhaps one way to share that love is to volunteer at a local pet shelter,
July 25, 2018
Don’t listen to Jackie (below). Tyra did her best for you, and she’ll be waiting for you. Never mind the King James or any other version. The true version is what you and Tyra shared. Your pain won’t disappear, but with time it will lessen, little by little. Tyra wouldn’t want you to suffer! Enjoy your memories! Keep pictures of her all around your home, thank her, — and lean on those who want to support you. Another dog would be a great idea. . . .
July 25, 2018
Thank you for sharing. I’ve lost my beloved Tyra and it is very painful to me and it’s been 2 months she’s been gone. I don’t know where and how to start again, I tried to join already some groups and reading this kind of blogs but the pain is still here and her memories are still fresh. Thank you to my friends who understand me and to pet loss houston for giving a great service to my Tyra.

SORRY TO SAY…BUT IN THE HOLY BIBLE…KING JAMES VERSION….IN REVELATIONS…THE LAST BOOK OF THE BIBLE….SAYS THAT….NO DOGS WILL ENTER HEAVEN….SORRY.
July 4, 2018
I really pray that they translated it wrong. It would be so unfair.
June 27, 2019
Wow I truly can’t believe that someone would be so heartless to post saying something so negative and in all caps saying…. “THE LAST BOOK OF THE BIBLE….SAYS THAT….NO DOGS WILL ENTER HEAVEN….SORRY.”. That is completely uncalled for when it wasn’t asked about nor anything positive for people who are grieving the loss of there dog/family member Didn’t your parents ever teach you if you didn’t have anything nice to say not to say anything at all? I’m so very sorry for the loss of each and everyone. I lost my baby boy a jack Russel and Shetland sheepdog (sheltie) mix who was 13 on 06-05-2019 and I am completely heart broken so I understand how everyone feels. We will all see our beloved dogs again in heaven. God bless!!!

I lost my beloved Yorkie this morning. Her name was Little Princess. She was just a few months from turning 16 years old. She was the most loyal and loving dog anyone could want. I miss her so bad and keep thinking it’s just a dream. God bless her little heart and hope she’s waiting for me in the next world. She was the greatest!!
February 10, 2018
Hello Cecil….. Came across this site and read your message about LittlePrincess soon to be 16y…… My wee Perry, a chihuahua, shy 12 days to his 16th year. Will be a month tomorrow and miss him more than words can express. Had him since 3 mnths. He was MY WORLD!! Where do the years go ? Seems like yesterday, he ”eyed” me and off we went enjoying Life. He was KING and then the twilight years appeared, heart murmur, fluid on lung and both eyes/cataracts. Yes, he was medicated, but nothing could be done for the cataracts apart from surgery and I felt he was too old for the anaesthetic because of his heart. The emptiness one feels, a emotional time. He is at peace now and his memory lives on as your Little Princess does. God Bless their wee hearts. Just my comment and I wish you well. PEace to You.

I especially loved the poem about Jesus and the dog! Thank you so much! My heart goes out to all the wonderful pet owners who have recently lost a beloved friend. We just had to say good-bye to our crazy, goofy, most lovable dog ever..Buttercup..on Sat. Lymphoma stole our beautiful furbaby. We tried everything..but..she was getting tired of trying..we had to let her go..her companion Belle..is missing her also..doesn’t understand where her pal is. Again..thank you!

We lost our Rudy at just over eight years old today. Cancer came and took him quickly in the end. The most sweet loving Golden Retriever loved us so much. He moved his head ro look me in the eyes one last time. We miss him so much already. The pain will ease for us but we will forever have him in our hearts. Thank you Lord for letting have him for eight years. I know you will have him much longer

I had to put my beagle who turned 12 on Tuesday down. His name was Buster. He was the best dog anyone could ask for. He stopped eating during the weekend so I took him to the vet on Monday. The blood work showed his sugar levels were 594 and pancreas was high too. She kept him there to feed him IV fluids and insulin but he never got better the next day was his 12 birthday so I went to see him. Unfortunelty he got worse yesterday and had a hard time breathing. She is thinking he had a tumor on his pancreas and it spread really fast. He lost about 12 lbs quick. I am so devastated. I know he lived a great life of 12 years but my heart breaks and just wish I could see him by my feet again. He followed me everywhere…I am so broken. I love you Buster and miss you more than you know.

I still miss my little girl, Maggie…. I had to place her in the arms of the angels on 11/30/16.
The last scenario in these quotes… “A Man and His Dog” is actually one of the old Twilight Zone episodes (Jan 1962) called “The Hunt”. If you ever get a chance to watch it, it’s a good one. Should be able to get it on Netflix, or YouTube (just have to find the correct YouTube version).
Nothing shows unconditional love on this side of heaven like a furry family member….
I love you and miss you, Maggie…

It is not a coincidence that I stumbled upon this website. The qotes are very comforting. My husband and I had to put our dog Maui down the other day. We never thought we would ever experience such excruciating pain from losing our BFF pet. The pain is unbearable. We had Maui for 12 years. The unconditional love that Maui displayed in indescribable. We miss him like crazy! The silent in the house is very loud. We will have his remains soon, and hopefully that will help ease the pain. “We will hold on to the memories until we hold you in Heaven.” All dogs go to Heaven. RIP Maui. No more suffering, no more pain.

We lost Monty on Christmas Eve, it was sudden and quick. He lived his life to the fullest like nothing matter. He enjoyed life and that is what I miss the most.

January 12, 2017
So sorry for your loss of Monty. The void in our lives after they have to leave us is huge… 🙁

I lost my beloved 11 year old Westie, Maggie a couple days ago. She had to be put to sleep after a complication from surgery. I never realized how painful this would be and thought she would have a few good years left. She died with my husband and I with her, which gave me great comfort. It was really peaceful.
Her absence is monumental and has been the most difficult to deal with. I keep waiting for her to walk in the room. Everything reminds me of her. I cry and beg to hold her one last time. My heart is broken and I don’t know if it will ever be whole again.
I appreciate the other posts. It helps to not feel so alone.
December 12, 2016
I lost my 11 year old lovely and extremely smart Australian Shepherd early Sunday morning. She was diagnosed with some kind of blood platelet disease and was given pills every day for a few weeks, but crashed in two days. All day Saturday I watched her struggle to go to all her favorite places in the yard. I knew she was looking for a place to die. She wanted to stay outside and didn’t want us to see her die. When it got dark, I had to pick her up out of the garden and carry her inside to her bed because it was cold outside. I knew she wouldn’t last the night, and when I got up in the morning, she had laid down at the inside door to the house and passed sometime in the early hours of the morning. I feel like I should have been with her or tried to do more, and I can’t stop crying. This must be difficult for you to read all these, but I’m glad you are here for us. Thank you so much.
December 12, 2016
I’m so sorry Daniel. I know how it feels to not have been present when your pet passes away – a similar situation happened with my dog, where no one was home when he died. Just remember that your dog got to be home and comfortable, and although you weren’t able to be there for her actual passing, she knew you loved her. She had a long and wonderful life – try to focus on all those good times instead. We’re all thinking and praying for you.
December 4, 2016
I lost my very first dog yesterday. She was a gorgeous Alaskan malamute named midnight. I’m a 17 year old guy and tried to keep a strong look but these poems made me cry my eyes out. They provided me such closure, thank you. I’ve truly never been this sad and depressed in my life. But this has helped, thank you.
December 5, 2016
So happy we can give you at least a little comfort and support in these hard times Callan.
October 30, 2016
I have cried through this whole page. My best friend called today to tell me her dog was dying and would probably be put down tomorrow. Eleven years ago I helped her son pick out “Hunny” for his first dog. Now he is grown up and gone to college, and he won’t be able to say good bye in person. I had to put my first dog down 13 years ago, and I still cry when I think of him. I know what my friend is going through, and I know that there are no words to soothe her at this time. I guess you have to cry it out until there are no more tears. Wondering when that happens. Thanks for listening.
November 7, 2016
Aww Judy, I’m so sorry. I know how hard it is.
September 30, 2016
We sadly had our boy Rodge who was 18 1/2 years put to sleep tonight. My husband and I held him and spoke to him telling him how much we loved him and we would miss him everyday as he quietly went to sleep in my arms. He had been fighting the fight with cancer for a few years now and what a champ he was. Sadly tonight it was just too much for him so we made the decision that he would suffer no more. After all the years of love and compainionship he gave us this was our gift to him. He was just not a pet he was our life…..how we will miss him….goodnight our love.
September 30, 2016
So sorry for your loss Jeniffer. Sounds like Rodge lived a wonderful life.
September 22, 2016
I took our Gracie, a 10- year old black lab mix, in last wed for a consultation about getting some lumps removed and while under anesthesia, have her toenails clipped and teeth cleaned. She had been lethargic lately and had diarrhea so the vet wanted to do some tests to make sure she would be healthy enough for the surgery. Well, we found out she had cancer in lungs, and radiologist confirmed it next morning (Thurs Sept 15) and said it probably started in her liver and spread to lungs, and blood was full of toxins. I made the very difficult decision to euthanize her, have her cremated and get ashes back, and had a paw print in clay made. Today it’s been one week; I made a little memorial shrine on a table with her ashes in middle surrounded by toys and candles. I plan to have a small memorial tonight with my husband and our other yellow 10.5 yr old lab, Buster. I will even recite the funeral prayer “ashes to ashes, dust to dust” etc. This is my way of having closure.
September 22, 2016
That sounds lovely Linda, and a great way to celebrate the fantastic life that I’m sure Gracie had.
September 19, 2016
Our family is in such pain….
My son took his precious 3 small dogs for a run in a quiet field late at night where they had taken them many times before. They were attacked by a pack of wild coyotes and one of the littlest was killed.
If that weren’t bad enough, he blames himself for not being attentive enough and is devastated. He is truly having trouble with this loss. They have a new baby and mom is having to deal with baby, Daddy, and the 2 dogs. I am 3 thousand miles away and can’t help. Please pray for us.
What can I say to comfort him? Them?
September 19, 2016
That’s so sad Gail, I’m so sorry for your loss. Survivor’s guilt is hard, but the sad truth is that tragedy happens every day, at no one’s fault. Who knows – coyotes in the area may have hurt your dog regardless of where they were walking. Try to help your son remember the good times rather than your dog’s tragic end. I’ll keep your family in my prayers.
September 7, 2016
I lost a wonderful pit bull almost a year ago. I was a soldier, so I shouldn’t cry, but I feel her sometimes. She wakes me a night, she gets close enough to feel. I read these poems from time to time, and it helps a little. I just hope she is waiting for me someday. I believe the Lord allows her come and comfort me on occasion, and for that I am grateful. We shall see them again!
August 15, 2016
I just lost my girl Samantha on Tuesday, She was 15 yrs old and suffered from Cushing’s disease, vestibular disease, and pancreatitis, on Monday evening she let me know that she just wasn’t strong enough to fight another battle. Samantha was my first dog, my confidant, my protector, my shadow and my best friend, every day I wake up and I can’t believe that she is truly gone. My heart aches for one more hug, to hear her softly snore and just to look up and see her sleeping beside me. It helps me to know that I had an extra day with her, I gave her her favorite food, including hot dogs and lots of treats, I gave her extra pain medicine to make sure she would not feel any discomfort, she usually sleeps in a crate, but that night I brought her in bed with me, I gave her millions of hugs and all the love I possibly could.
August 7, 2016
We had to make the decision to say goodbye to our dog on 8/1 due to vet error. I rescued her 11 years ago and she was scared and gentle & was the most amazing friend I could have imagined. I walked her every morning for the last 11 yrs & now I wake up empty and sad and guilty. Crying in waves – the rest of the time I’m just a robot trying to get thru my day. We sleep with her toys which somehow helps. All of these posts help knowing I’m not alone in this grief- that there are other people going through something similar is somehow comforting. I’m sorry for all of your losses and pray there is a spirit world and that she is still here and knows how much we miss her.

Your quotes have really comforted me, i must say this. Thank you for these wonderful quotes and poems.
I lost the most important part of my lifee too, she was the best dog i ever had. She had an operation for removing stone, it was successful. Doctor even said she can easily live 2 or 3 years more, as she was already 10. But just in few hours, after we brought her home, she died. Without uttering any thing, she passed away, leaving our lives and home forever. But she will always be in our hearts, memories, and talks. We know she is in a much better place now, watching us from the sky. We will see her again on the day of God’s Judgement. Rest in Peace beautiful soul. Your place in our heart is never gonna change. Miss you cutie.

I just lost my bichon, Sofie on Tuesday July 26th, 2016. It was very sudden and unexpected. I am gutted and don’t know what to do with myself. I live alone so my little girl was everything. My life and routine revolved around her, just like her’s revolved around me. This pain of loss is so heavy on my heart and I wish it would go away. I’d love to get another dog but don’t want to go through this again.

I feel the same way. I just lost my dog yesterday and he was the world to me. I live alone also and feel so lost and don’t know what to do. It’s so quite in the house now, I don’t have him following me all over the place wherever I go. We would always go for walks, but what do I do now? It wont be the same without him.

I had to put my Bichon down today .He had diabetes and cushings disease .I spent the last 3 months
watching him deteriorate .He became blind and was unaware of life basically.Spencer was 12 and 1/2 yrs old .He
was my best companion .Better than all my husbands(2) .I’m so lost tonight without him but the last few months
of his life were aganozing.Watching him hit walls unabke to negotiate an area .Heartbreaking.I found out today he also had cushings disease .My little guy held out for me .I see now that I waited too long and he was in terrible
physical and psychological pain .
I’m having him cremated and his ashes will be with mine .
I couldn’t go through this again either .My heart is broken .

So sorry for your loss Karina. Losing a pet is so painful – just trust that eventually that intense grief and pain will soften (I thought it never would either, but it will). Focus on all the good memories with Gromet.

Missing my 123-pound Black Lab, Sloopy. Gone in an instant and totally unexpected. He was my FIRST RESCUE DOG and, BY FAR, MY BEST. It hurts the most when I try to pretend it doesn’t hurt at all. =(

I lost my K9 partner two days ago. She was in her prime, and it was a sudden and freak thing. She was my Velcro GSD, my constant companion, my partner. She was there for me through my divorce and my daily focus when I was without my children. She was my heart dog. I feel like I’m missing an arm and I can’t keep the tears away. She was the most impressive dog I’ve ever met let alone worked and I don’t know what to do each day without her. I’m so lost.

My little dog Maggie died this evening. She was struggling to breath, just today, and her heart gave out. She was 11 and a half, and my constant companion the last 7 years. She was half Schnauzer, half poodle, loving, loyal, brave and funny. I can’t stop crying. I know she isbt suffering and is okay and I’m so grateful for the time we had together. I miss her little wooly presence.

So sorry Gwyn – praying for you and Maggie.
