Are you searching for a best basset buddy? Purebred basset hounds are certainly amazing dogs, but you might want to consider a basset hound mix too!
With their loving and patient personalities, basset hounds pass on plenty of excellent traits to the mixes they’re a part of. Let’s take a look at some of these canine cuties below!
Getting to Know the Basset Hound
There are few dogs more charming than the darling basset hound.
These low-to-the ground canine companions are best known for their superior sense of smell and laid-back personalities, but there’s a lot more to them than that!
They’re also some of the most amusing vocalizers in the canine world, and they’re typically very friendly four-footers, who tend to get along with others well.
But they aren’t perfect, either. For example, in true hound fashion, these floofs can be a bit headstrong, but they’re still teachable – you just need to use lots of positive-based training.
Physically, the iconic basset hound is famous for his long, velvety ears. But while these ears are certainly adorable, they will require a bit of care. So, be sure you learn how to clean your dog’s ears before adding a basset or basset-mix to your family.
These stout furry friends are usually considered medium-sized dogs, as they weigh between 50 and 60 pounds. But they’re obviously pretty short, as they typically stand only 14 inches tall at the shoulder. Basset hounds do enjoy fairly long life spans, and most live between 10 and 12 years.
Note that basset hounds aren’t the cleanest canines – you can expect plenty of drool and flatulence with these furry friends — in fact, they’re one of the gassiest dog breeds around. However, many owners are happy to cut their losses for the unbeatable sweetness of these dignified dogs.

1. Bagel Hound (Basset Hound x Beagle)
This darling dog may be 50% beagle and 50% basset, but he’s 100% hound! You’ll need plenty of patience to handle this canine’s comedic antics and relentless search for smells, but the cuteness will certainly help.
Thankfully, the charming Bagel Hound makes up for it in full with endless affection and an unwaveringly friendly disposition. This marvelous mutt is incredibly adaptable so long as he gets plenty of playtime and treats.
2. Bassador (Basset Hound x Labrador Retriever)
These sweetie pies are truly man’s best friend, and they’re sure to win you over with their happy disposition and devotion. Bassadors love spending time outside (in fact, they’re some of the best outdoor dogs around), and they are always up for an adventure with their favorite humans.
This marvelous mix may be stubborn at times, but you’ll have no trouble winning him over with a treat or two. Just be careful not to overfeed this unique canine cross – both parent pups are prone to obesity.
3. Basset Shepherd (Basset Hound x German Shepherd)
If you’re looking for true loyalty, this cross between a German shepherd and basset hound is certainly worth considering. These dashing dogs are confident and curious, so they make amazing adventure buddies
The Basset Shepherd will show your family plenty of affection but may need some time to warm up around strangers. You’ll want to start socializing these basset-hound-shepherd mixes as soon as possible.
4. Ba Shar (Basset Hound x Shar Pei)
The Ba Shar is a beautiful basset hound and shar pei mix that features the adorable long ears and cute wrinkles from both of the parent pups.
Ba Shar pups are sometimes surprisingly smart and love pooch parents who can challenge them with puzzle toys and plenty of activities. Just understand that these pups are somewhat independent, so they can be a bit challenging to train.
5. Bassetoodle (Basset Hound x Poodle)
This cross between a mellow basset hound and playful poodle results in a curious, loving canine that adores tagging along with the rest of the family. Bassetoodles are incredibly intelligent (poodles are, after all, one of the smartest dog breeds), though they do march to the beat of their own drums, so you’ll want to implement plenty of consistent training.
As a bonus, the Bassetoodle’s poodle parent also helps cut back on some of the drool and endless shedding the basset hound parent provides.
6. Aussie Basset (Australian Shepherd x Basset Hound)
Aussie Bassets are lively canine companions who usually bond closely with one special human. These intelligent family pups are eager to learn tricks and will keep you busy with their adventurous spirits.

8. Bully Basset (Basset Hound x Bulldog)

These cuties love to play and do well in just about any home, so long as there is usually someone around to spend time with.
9. Bassmatian (Basset Hound x Dalmatian)
This spotted sweetheart has an endless thirst for adventure and pairs well with an active pet parent. These charming dogs love spending time with their family members and typically get along great with kids.
As long as these cute crosses get plenty of exercise, they are fairly low-maintenance dogs. Training can be challenging, but you can win over these curious canines with a bit of hard work and tasty treats.
10. Rottie Basset (Basset Hound x Rottweiler)
The Rottie Basset is a sensitive sweetie that loves to cuddle up next to his favorite people. As a true family dog, Rottie Bassets love to spend time with children and adults alike.
These strong doggos love to spend time outdoors and appreciate a fenced-in space to roam around in. You’ll find that the Rottie Basset forgets his size often and tries his very best to be a lapdog.
11. Bassug (Basset Hound x Pug)
Look at those eyes! The endearing cross of a pug and basset hound is a cuddly canine companion that’s happy to be your full-time couch buddy. These pups don’t need too much exercise and usually get along well with other pets.
Bassugs are super adaptable and can make great apartment dogs if need be. With a playful and loving personality, you’re bound to fall for these fun-sized furry friends.
12. Basset Heeler (Basset Hound x Australian Cattle Dog)
The Basset Heeler is one of the more independent mixes, though he’s fiercely loyal towards his family members. These pups have plenty of energy, so they need to get a ton of exercise and playtime to keep their tails wagging.
These pups are, however, best suited for single-dog families, as they can have problems getting along with other doggos at times. If you’re seeking for an active hiking hound, your search may end here.
13. Basschshund (Basset Hound x Dachshund)
As a descendant of two hunting dog breeds, the Basschshund is a curious canine who follows his nose. But although these dogs are sweet, they need pooch parents who can provide them with plenty of guidance so that they can grow into their best selves.
These compact canines are a bit more on the independent side, but they’re happy to curl up next to their favorite humans at the end of the day. The Basschshund can be somewhat aloof towards strangers, but he shines in front of family and familiar friends.
14. Boxset (Basset Hound x Boxer)
This irresistible mutt mug belongs to the Boxset, the playful cross between a boxer and basset hound. These fine family dogs love spending time with their humans, and get along well with other pets in the home.
These cuddly canines love spending time on the couch, but they’re also happy to accompany you on a stroll or hike. Boxsets are sure to leave a pawprint on your heart with their sweet and silly dispositions.
15. Bowser (Basset Hound x Schnauzer)
The Bowser is an adorable canine cross with a wiry coat and playful presence. These pups may be a bit aloof around strangers, though they are super affectionate towards their family members.
Bowser pups are generally obedient though they’ll benefit from positive obedience training like all other doggos.
16. Basset Retriever (Basset Hound x Golden Retriever)
Cross a loving basset hound with an eager to please golden retriever, and you’ll get a loyal canine companion that is sure to provide plenty of kisses (goldens are one of the most affectionate dog breeds, after all). These canine cuties are known to be permanent puppies with their playful and sweet spirits, and they’re pretty smart too.
Basset retrievers are best suited for lively homes where there’s always someone to follow around. But they’re not picky — they’ll usually fall in love with every two-footer they meet.
17. Chow Hound (Basset Hound x Chow Chow)
This sweet face belongs to the Chow Hound (we love that name, by the way). This canine cross can be a bit independent thanks to his chow chow parent breed, so he may make a good fit for working pet parents. However, we wouldn’t recommend him for a family with small kids (chow chow mixes in general probably aren’t the best choice for kiddos).
The Chow Hound enjoys his daily walks and will need firm yet positive training to guide his free spirit. This purple-tongued pooch is pretty adaptable and can do well in urban and rural environments so long as his exercise needs are met.
18. Dobie Basset (Basset Hound x Doberman)
The Dobie Basset is a skilled watchdog and loyal canine companion, who’s always ready to “sound the alarm” when something out of the ordinary happens. These intelligent dogs are easy to train and are sure to alert you of any funny business with their bellowing bark.
But despite their people-pleasing Dobie parents, these pups can be somewhat independent, so they require firm, positive training to grow into their best selves.
19. Basset Russell (Basset Hound x Jack Russell)
These friendly furballs have a contagious zest for life. The Basset Russell will love playing with her family members and does well around kids and other pets alike.
You’ll have to stay consistent with training to match this compact canine’s mighty spirit, but this mutt’s eager to please attitude should be fairly easy to win over.
20. Bassky (Basset Hound x Husky)
If you’re on the hunt for a mid-sized canine companion with plenty of heart, the Bassky is worth considering. The Bassky has plenty of energy from his husky parent, and — considering huskies are one of the dog breeds with blue eyes — he might even end up with some blue peepers too.
These smart four-footers love to learn tricks and go on runs. Basskys can be considered independent thinkers, so they need a patient pet parent who’s committed to consistent training sessions.
21. Houndahua (Basset Hound x Chihuahua)
These adorable furry friends love doling out cuddles to their favorite people. The basset hound Chihuahua mix doesn’t require too much exercise, and — like most basset mixes — he can be pretty vocal.
While theses pups adore their families, they can also be somewhat protective. You’ll want to start socialization early with these mutts since this basset mix may inherit some of the feisty nature of the Chihuahua parent.
22. Swiss Hound (Basset Hound x Bernese Mountain Dog)
When you cross a basset hound with a sweet Berner, you get a best buddy for life. This marvelous mixed breed is a doting dog that will likely bond closely with one special human.
These pups are fairly easy to train with their eager to please attitudes. That being said, pick up a vacuum since these mutts are sure to shed.
23. Bassabull (American Pit Bull Terrier x Basset Hound)
What a cross! These canine cuties are energized, playful pups that love spending time with their families. Just like the parent breeds, the pit bull basset hound mix makes an excellent canine companion for kids.
You’ll want to make sure that these energized four-footers get plenty of exercise on a regular basis. Thanks to the pittie parent, these mutts are usually fairly easy to maintain.
24. Corgi Basset (Basset Hound x Corgi)
Don’t be fooled by the compact frame – the Corgi Basset is plenty playful and loves seeking out adventure with his family members. This lively mixed breed will keep you on your toes with his curious and energetic personality.
Corgi Bassets are friendly fellas and will make an amazing companion for families and solo pet parents alike. Just be sure they get the exercise necessary to keep their tails wagging.
25. Basselier (Basset Hound x Cavalier King Charles Spaniel)
If you’re searching for a velcro dog, the sweet Basselier is an amazing pick. These cuddly canines adore spending time with people and make amazing family dogs.
These happy-go-lucky dogs do best in households where someone is usually home. He also gets along well with other pups and furry friends, so this mutt will easily fit into a multi pet household. Best of all, Cavalier King Charles spaniels are considered one of the best breeds for first-time owners, so these mixes are great for dog-owning novices.
Where Can You Find Basset Hound Mixes?
Tracking down any designer doggo can be challenging, but the internet is a great place to start. You can begin by using a search engine like Petfinder to seek out adoptable furry friends in your vicinity. These sites allow you to narrow your search by breed, so it shouldn’t be too challenging to find a basset buddy.
Another option is to call your local shelter and rescue organizations. Adopting a deserving doggo is awesome, and there may be a basset pooch in their network. Just be sure to get your potential pup’s full history from the shelter staff to ensure that it’s a good fit.
You can also look around for reputable dog breeders, though it may be admittedly difficult to find a specific cross. If you’re lucky enough to know any basset mixed breed owners, see if they can point you in the right direction.
Before committing to any canine, make sure that he’s the right hound for your home and that you can provide your pooch with everything he needs to thrive. Adorable as they are, basset hound mixes and any dog for that matter are a lot of responsibility.

Our Hush Bassett doesn’t look much like the one in your article. Odie’s a blonde with long shaggy fur that is soft and silky on his head, the hair on his back is coarse and candy floss like on his back legs. He gets dreadlocks on his legs and muzzle. He has 8″ long tassels that dangle from his tail. He smiles when he greets people. The most exercise he gets is from tail wagging. He talks like Scooby Do. His 13th birthday is next month so he’s much like a little old man but still charms the heck out of everyone he meets
