Worked like a charm! I later used the same principle with my Maine Coon cats, so that they too may experience freedom outside in our yard and in the countryside. My current dog has had a long leash as her #1 leash since puppyhood, though we do have several others too, depending on circumstances. The main reason I use a long leash in a urban setting is actually to give myself some time to react. If I spot a dog coming around the corner, it takes me a bit of time to pick up the slack on my long leash. That way I can still leave some slack on the leash, not signalling tension to my own dog via tension in the leash. This is not possible with a regular leash or a retractable one, both relay the tension immediately and signal my (at times reactive) dog that something may be an issue. So a huge recommendation for long leashes here from Finland.
Ps. I only use BioThane -type materials with my dog, nylon webbing would just snag on branches and get too dirty and wet. With the cats I use light nylon rope (round, a type that doesn't get snagged).
