Hey there, Jelle. Here are a couple of resources that may help (some are popular articles, while others are academic works):

Effects of 2 training methods on stress-related behaviors of the dog (Canis familiaris) and on the dogeowner relationship
Dominance in domestic dogs—useful construct or bad habit?
The relationship between training methods and the occurrence of behavior problems, as reported by owners, in a population of domestic dogs

Dog training methods: Their use, effectiveness and interaction with behaviour and welfare

Survey of the use and outcome of confrontational and non-confrontational training methods in client-owned dogs showing undesired behaviors

The wolf pack: sharp teeth and strong family units
Should I Alpha Roll My Dog?

Best of luck!

I am currently studying canine behaviour and am writing about this topic. Could you point me to some of the scientific papers/research that shows pack theory and dominance theory are outdated.

Thank you!

Cheers,
Jelle

Hi, Ja.
You’re certainly welcome to think what you like, but the science is clearly, overwhelmingly on Claire’s side.
Best of luck!

I roll them over and put my jaw on their throat and put just a tad of pressure, and each time, the dogs instinctively got it, never to growl at me like that again. Now mind you, I perhaps would be reticent to try this with much bigger dogs or certain breeds, but there is an instinct that kicks in when they realize they are dominated right on their throat by the alpha. I prefer this method to shock collars for sure. Again, however, I do not have dogs so big, strong, or typically of a genetically more aggressive nature. So, keep that in mind. My point is that some of what you are saying is straight-up untrue. Dogs want to respect their alpha leaders.

The misuse of this word isn’t cute, and it certainly isn’t appropriate. It contradicts the message behind the article so why not lose the word “pack.”
