DIY Dog Bandanas Craft
- Difficulty: Easy
Supplies:
- Cotton Fabric
- Matching Thread
Directions:
For this DIY all you need is some fabric and matching thread (along with basic sewing supplies).
To draft a custom pattern for your dog, first take their collar or neck measurement. (Mimi was 14.5-15”.) Draw a straight line this length, then add an additional 4” on either side.
Find the center of this line and draw a perpendicular guide. The shape of the bandana is really up to your preference, but I eyeballed around 7.5” down.
Fold your pattern along your guideline and connect this center point to the end with a ruler on either side.
Once you have your bandana triangle shape, add a ½” seam allowance all the way around, making sure to also create a ½” allowance at the sharp points.
Use your pattern to cut your fabric, I used some leftover watermelon fabric from our collar and leash DIYs. If you haven’t seen those already check them out! (can link here to other blog post/vids)
Press all edges of the bandana. First press a ½”, then tuck the edge under ¼” for a clean hem. I like to start with the two small ends of the triangle first and finish with the longest side.
To press the corners cleanly, open the flaps to a ¼” on each side and press in about ½”. Then fold both edges back over and press down. If needed, you can trim some of the excess fabric if it shows when folded over.
Once the entire bandana has all of the edges pressed, sew around the triangle using the presser foot as your guide making sure to backstitch at the beginning and end. Press again if needed and you’re finished!
You can fasten bandanas in different ways with snaps, etc. but I find this to be the easiest way to make these without worrying about exact measurements.
These are super easy to make and customize for different sized dogs since this pattern is so forgiving! They make great little gifts for the holidays too!
