There are so many reasons to love Jack Russell Terriers; they have big hearts and a wide set of skills.
Jack Russell terriers were traditionally used as fox hunting dogs, but are now better known as fantastic family pups. Mixed breed Jack Russell terriers harbor these same attributes, plus more. They are some of the most playful pooches, sweetest snugglers, and all around enjoyable animals to have in your home.
Let us know what you think about these cute canines in the comments below!
1. Jack Russell Terrier x Fox Terrier (Jack-Fox Terrier)
These dogs are some of the kindest canines around, and despite their little bodies, they have incredibly big hearts.
One part Jack Russell and one part fox terrier, these darling little doggos have a true terrier’s drive to find and hunt vermin!
2. Jack Russell Terrier x Pug (Jug)
This sweet pup has the adorable squished face of a Pug with the bouncy personality of a Jack Russell. These mixes are fond of running, digging, and all things playful.
Just be sure to be careful with these little guys and gals in hot weather, as their pug parent’s influence may cause them to have some breathing problems, which can make it hard for them to cool down.
3. Jack Russell Terrier x Beagle (Jack-A-Bee)
This adorable mix often displays the body structure of a Jack Russell and the pattern of a beagle, but their most noteworthy characteristic is likely their incomparable zeal for life, which comes courtesy of both parents.
Jack-A-Bees are well known for being sweet, sensitive, and endearing dogs, and they make great pets for families with kiddos. Do be aware that these dogs tend to have a high prey drive, so they may not be great dogs for pet owners who also have cats.
4. Jack Russell Terrier x Boston Terrier (Bo-Jack)
The Bo-Jack is a cross between the “American gentleman” (Boston terrier) and the spunky Jack Russell.
This mixed-breed doggo is typically praised for being good-tempered, loving, and very intelligent. But he also has a playful and energetic side, which means he’s always ready to have a good time! Fortunately for many would-be owners, Boston Terrier mixes tend to be low-maintenance, who only needs about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day. But if your pup has a little more JRT in him, he may need more time to romp and burn off all that terrier energy!
5. Jack Russell Terrier x Border Collie (Border Jack)
Border Jacks are one part Jack Russell and one part border collie, and the result is an incredibly agile pooch, who usually thrives at many canine sports. Given that both the parents breeds have innate agility and athleticism, these pups need an active family with a big yard.
Just be sure to keep your Border Jack busy, lest he get into mischief while trying to entertain himself. It’s also important to keep him on a tight leash while walking, as this mixed breed dog has an intense prey drive.
6. Jack Russell Terrier x Cairn Terrier (Jacairn)
Jacarin dogs are a perfect pet for many soon-to-be dog owners, as they’re both adorable and relatively easy to care for. Most Jacairns are intelligent, obedient, and active, and they’re always ready to play.
You will have to make sure your little Jack-Russell-Cairn-Terrier mix stays warm in the winter though, so consider fitting him with a high-quality dog coat for small dogs when the mercury falls. Also, the Cairn terrier — like many other little terriers — has a high prey drive, so lock up the cat before bringing one home!
7. Jack Russell Terrier x Chihuahua (Jack Chi)
The Jack Chi — a cross between a Jack Russell terrier and a Chihuahua — is a lovely little lad, who never strays far from his family.
In fact, one of the most admirable qualities about Jack Chis is that they are exceptionally good with kids. These energetic pups are sometimes described as being a “big dog trapped in a little body,” due to their large presence and small frame.
8. Jack Russell Terrier x Cocker Spaniel (Cocker Jack)
This sweet pooch has the boldness of the Jack Russell Terrier, combined with the more reserved nature of the cocker spaniel mix, resulting in a pooch that’s a perfect, balanced blend of puppy attributes.
These mixes are quite loyal and loving, and they are particularly devoted to their human companions. But one of their most endearing personality traits is their desire to always be the center of attention.
9. Jack Russell Terrier x Dachshund (Jackshund)
The combination of two very different dogs ultimately results in one of the most affectionate and fun-loving pups out there. Though each pup will have its own personality, Jackshunds are generally well behaved, yet energetic and playful. They can have a surprisingly strong prey drive, so they’re not ideal for pet lovers who have cats or other small critters at home.
Understand that you may need to pick up some puppy pee pads before bringing your new Jackshund home, as their dachshund parent may lead to some house-training issues.
10. Jack Russell Terrier x French Bulldog (French Bull Jack)
The French Bull Jack is considered one of the most appealing mixed-breed pups around, due to the sturdy frame of the French bulldog combined with the outgoing personality of the Russel terrier.
The Bull Jack is a very energetic breed, so despite his small size, he needs lots of space to run and play! But if you can provide sufficient daily exercise, these can be great family dogs, even for first-time dog owners.
11. Jack Russell Terrier x Basenji (Jackenji)
An odd combo, mixing the Basenji and a Jack Russell terrier can result in a bit of a mystery – your pup may have the noisy vocalizations of the Jack Russell, or might be more silent and stoic like a basenji (which is known to be one of the most quiet dog breeds out there)!
12. Jack Russell Terrier x Golden Retriever (Golden Jack Retriever)
The Golden Jack Retriever may seem like a puzzling combination of parent breeds, but the results are doggone darling! They come in several colors, buy most will have a yellow or white coat, though some may also display brown colors.
These Russell-terrier-golden-retriever mixes tend to embody the characteristics of both breeds, as thy are energetic, goofy, and love, love, love swimming in the water. These are great small dogs for families with young kiddos.
13. Jack Russell Terrier x German Shepherd
The Jack Russell and German Shepherd mix is not a very common pooch, but these intelligent canines sure do look cute! Just be sure these pooches have plenty of space, as they sure do have plenty of energy.
Also, you’ll need to be ready to deal with a fair amount of fur laying around the house, as both the Russell terrier and GSD are pretty heavy shedders.
14. Jack Russell Terrier x Pomeranian (Jack-A-Ranian/Jack-Pom)
The Jack-Pom is great for families who aren’t always active because these pups are great at entertaining themselves! They’d still rather play with you than enjoy some solo playtime, but these are perfect pooches for interactive dog toys.
They’re definitely a great Pomeranian mix, taking the fluff of a Pom and combining it with the energy level of a Jack Russell!
15. Jack Russell Terrier x Rat Terrier (Jack Rat)
Another combination of two terriers, the Jack Rat is a tried-and-true terrier, so inspect a confident and potentially noisy (but endlessly amusing) companion in this cutie!
16. Jack Russell Terrier x Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie Jack)
This gorgeous terrier mix looks a like like a Yorkie, but he also has characteristics that come courtesy of the Russell terrier side of the equation.
These pups are loyal and have a high energy level, but they’re also relatively laidback pooches, who tend to go with the flow. These dogs generally have medium-length coats, a compact body, and affectionate personalities, which all combine to make for an excellent family pet.
17. Jack Russell Terrier x Siberian Husky (Husky Jack)
The Husky Jack can vary in appearance, but he usually has the body of the terrier and the coat of a husky. As a result of the two parent dogs, these pooches are very energetic and need a lot of space to run and play.
Notably, these Russell-terrier-husky mixes are often very social dogs, who tend to get along with people and other pooches alike. But understand that these are very high-energy doggos, who require lots of intense exercise and do best when living with an active family.
18. Jack Russell Terrier x Blue Merle
With a cross between two high-drive dogs like the Jack Russell terrier and the blue merle, you better have plenty of extra time on your hands in order to provide this pup with the exercise she needs to be happy!
19. Jack Russell Terrier x Rottweiler (Jackweiler)
OK, so this is a bit of an unusual breed combo, but it’s hard to argue with the results!
Jackweilers — who are one part Russell terrier and one part Rottweiler — come in different pattern and color varieties, but they are all some of the most loyal dogs in the world. These doggos are also affectionate, dependable, and goofy, making them wonderful woofer companions.
20. Jack Russell Terrier x Poodle (Jack-A-Poo)
The Jack-A-Poo is a playful dog, who is great for families. These sweet pooches are affectionate, caring, playful, and cuddly, and they’re also quite smart and pick up things quickly.
However, many pet parents love them for another reason: These little doggos shed very little, thanks to their poodle parents. This makes them great for allergy sufferers and neat freaks alike. They often have white coats, but you can also find them in other coat colors.
21. Jack Russell Terrier x Papillon (Papijack)
The Papijack pooch is a delightful little mixed breed doggo, created by breeding a Russell terrier with a papillon. He generally makes a fantastic family pet, who’ll ensure you never experience a dull moment.
Just be sure you’re ready to stay active before bringing one of these little lovable floofs home — they need a lot of exercise and attention. They are also quite expressive and playful, which makes them all-around wonderful puppers as well as great exercise buddies.
22. Jack Russell Terrier x Corgi (Cojack)
Before going further, we need you to stop reading for a second and just enjoy that cheeky smile! How cute is this little doggo?!?
The Cojack is a mixed breed dog who’s half Pembroke corgi and half Russell terrier. This makes for a truly one-of-a-kind canine, who is a pure bundle of energy that’ll thrive in most family environments. They can vary in terms of looks, but most have the tail, face, and goofy nature of a corgi, with the pattern, prey drive, and playfulness of a terrier.
Traits of the Jack Russell Terrier
Before you run out and bring home one of these Jack Russell terrier mixes, it’s important that you learn a thing or two about the breed (although you’ll obviously need to learn about the other half of your Russell terrier mix too).
Here are a few of the most important things to keep in mind about these little cuties:
- Jack Russell terriers are very affectionate dogs, who tend to bond strongly with their families. That means — unlike some other breeds, who have relatively aloof demeanors — Jack Russells want to be with their families as much as possible. They don’t want to just live in the backyard all by themselves.
- The Russell terrier is relatively easy to groom, but he does shed quite a bit. So, if flying fur isn’t really your thing, be sure to pick a Jack Russell terrier mix that incorporates a low-shedding parent breed, like a poodle.
- Jack Russell terriers generally get along well with other canines. These tiny terriers are pretty gregarious dogs, making them a blast at the dog park. However, they also have a strong prey drive and are ratter dogs, which can cause problems for homes with cats or other small mammals.
- Russell terriers are smart dogs who are generally easy to train. One of the most appealing traits of these pooches is their intelligence. This not only makes them easy to train, it also makes them quite entertaining.
- Jack Russells are incredibly energetic puppers. Don’t get a Jack Russell terrier mix if you just want a dog who’ll chill out on the couch with you all day. These four-footers want to run, jump, play, sniff, and explore from dawn to dusk. This means you’ll need to ensure that your new pooch gets plenty of exercise.
- Some Russell terriers are vocal doggos. Unfortunately, Jack Russells can be prone to barking and howling, so be sure that your neighbors won’t be bothered by this before bringing home a little Russell terrier mix (this is particularly important when considering a mix that includes a hound dog parent).

Are these ‘accidental’ crossbreeds? I would hope so. Deliberately producing ‘Frankenstein’ dogs such as a JRT/Siberian Husky cross is totally unnecessary and just plain wrong and shouldn’t be allowed.
November 3, 2022
Hey there, Elston.
We don’t know for sure whether some of these were deliberately produced or not.
But there’s nothing “wrong” with combining vastly different dog breeds, even if the result isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
Thanks for checking out the site!

The love of my life is my dog Maximus “Max” or “Maxi” for short. I was told my dog is a jack Russell/ Lhasa also. I was just wondering what the name would be for that mix. Also if you have any information about that breed specifically I would love to read it. Thanks in advance…
August 6, 2021
Hey, Amanda.
Mixed breed names aren’t really official — most are simply the names most commonly used by owners. Usually, people just kind of splice the two names together in the most “roll-off-the-tongue” way.
Your particular mix is slightly tricky, as both breeds are two-word names. But (off the top of my head), something like “Jackapso” sounds kinda cute to me.
We don’t have an article about your specific mix, but we’re always publishing new titles, so check back!

We’ve got a Jack Russell mix that we rescued from the RSPCA. They couldn’t help us much with his ancestry – he’s basically the spitting image of a Jack-Chi but he’s A LOT bigger than either a Jack Russell or a Chihuahua. Any ideas?
May 25, 2020
Hey, James.
There’s not much we can tell without seeing a photo. And even then, appearances can be very deceptive.
The only way to know for sure is to use a canine DNA test. Check out our review of the Embark Dog DNA test — it may be very helpful in your situation.
Best of luck!

I’d like info on the jack Russell English pointer mixed breed. Ours is sweet to children and they are the only distraction strong enough to detain her from a running streak, lovable, a ratter, and smart but does not tolerate other dogs (except the minpin mix we had before she arrived and it took a full 3 weeks for them to live socially next to one another!) She weighs 26# is white with a black face mask and 3 huge black spots on her coat. She will point and is a jumper. We adopted her at age 6 where we discovered the 4″ vertical scar under her chin was from tangling with a raccoon whom she subdued. She is relatively quiet but will let loose a deep baritone bark if instigated by her housemate barking. Please tell me which traits are the jack and which the pointer. Also any other info suggestions etc welcome.
