About Kayla Fratt (Founder of Journey Dog Training)

Kayla Fratt runs Journey Dog Training and has also been a writer for K9 of Mine for several years.

Her dog training experience is quite extensive – she is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) and is a member of Dog Writer’s Association of America. She also worked previously as a behavior technician at Denver Dumb Friend League animal shelter and holds a degree in biology from Colorado College.

Kayla specializes in difficult behavior problems, but also loves trick training and competitive dog sports. Her training methods are based on setting the dog up for success and rewarding good choices.

A self-proclaimed animal behavior nerd, she keeps up-to-date on current dog theory and in more recent years has since become an expert in agility, herding, scent work, rally obedience, TEAM obedience, skijoring, and canicross, which she trains in with her own dog – a Border Collie named Barley.

Kayla grew up training homing pigeons and falcons in rural northern Wisconsin. She started her own dog training business in 2012, Journey Dog Training, to pay her way through college.

She started writing for K9 of Mine in 2016, shortly after graduating from Colorado College with a degree in biology. Shortly thereafter, she got a job at Denver Dumb Friends League in the behavior department.

At Denver Dumb Friends League, Kayla spent her days training dogs and cats that were not quite ready for adoption. She worked with major hoarding and neglect cases as well as many dogs and cats that were just nervous in new situations. Her favorite dogs to work with were the high energy dogs, who often suffered the most in the shelter. She also enjoyed regularly fostering behaviorally challenging dogs.
