Even though beds are meant for resting, dog beds often end up being chew toys for rougher pets. Unfortunately, not every fabric can withstand curious chompers or digging feet.
This is where a chew proof dog bed can save the day. Made specifically for pups who paw and nibble at items, these tough dog beds can withstand more doggy damage than most.
Below, we’ll dig into the details of chew proof dog beds, discuss which dogs can benefit from having one, and share a few of our favorites for your consideration.
What is a Chew Proof Dog Bed?
Chew proof dog beds are sleeping spots for Spot that feature any of several different design characteristics to make them more likely to stand up to your dog’s teeth. A few of the most common design features incorporated by chew proof dog beds include:
- Some chew proof dog beds are made with super durable or reinforced materials that are not easily destroyed by a dog’s teeth.
- Most chew proof dog beds lack tooth-tempting accessories, such as tassels or exposed zippers.
- Some chew proof beds feature an elevated design, consisting of a metal frame and a single, taught piece of fabric (something like a tight hammock).
Owners with chew-happy dogs or teething puppies should consider getting a chew proof dog bed. Not needing to replace destroyed beds saves you money, and it can potentially prevent your dog from ingesting torn materials that can make him ill.
Key Features of Chew Proof Dog Beds
Not all chew proof dog beds are created equal. Some claim to be tough but have designs that can’t withstand paws, claws, and teeth. Now, they may not all be made for the toughest chewers, but they should be able to withstand light chewers or medium chewers at a minimum.
Look for these key features when considering a chew proof bed:
- Reinforced construction. Chew proof dog beds need extra reinforcement. They should be much sturdier than traditional dog beds, with extra stitching and lining for increased durability. Common materials also include strong, metal zippers and snug-fit covers.
- Abrasion-resistant material. A dog bed is only chew-proof if the material is abrasion-resistant. No matter how hard your dog tries, he should not be able to leave a hole in the material like he easily can in most beds. Cordura and canvas are some of the more popular cover materials for indestructible dog beds, as these materials are extremely durable and tear-resistant.
- Tougher frames. The best chew-proof dog beds also use stronger materials for their frames (if it’s a style of dog bed with legs), like aluminum or PVC frames. These can withstand chewing as well as roughhousing, particularly with large, bouncy barkers that are known to be tough on beds.
- Sit off the ground. Beds that are off the ground are often more difficult for dogs to chew through. They seem like a bed to lay on, rather than a toy to tear apart. This also offers orthopedic support for dogs, which is an added bonus, particularly with seniors or canines with mobility concerns.
- Washable covers. It sounds silly, but keeping your dog’s bed clean and odor-free can prevent him from gnawing away at an area that smells interesting. If it’s a waterproof cover, that’s even better, as it protects the interior from scents and liquids. Having a replacement cover handy for use while one is in the wash is recommended, as slipping one on lets your furry friend continue to use his bed during cleanings.

You may notice that some manufacturers refer to their beds as being chew proof, while others call their beds chew-resistant.
Is there a real difference between the two?
Not really.
There is no governing body that oversees the use of these terms — manufacturers can essentially call them whatever they like (within reason).
In practice, some manufacturers use the term chew-resistant to sidestep the fact that no bed is truly 100% chew proof.
In a way, it’s somewhat similar to products that are water-resistant, as opposed to being waterproof. The former term describes products that can handle some water exposure, while the latter describes those items that can handle just about all of the moisture you throw at them.
Other manufacturers and resources use the terms relatively interchangeably.
What’s the takeaway?
While you should keep in mind that these terms aren’t “official” in any capacity, and that no bed is completely indestructible, chew proof beds are likely to be a bit more resilient than beds marketed as being chew-resistant.
Why Do Dogs Chew Their Beds?
Bed-chewing is frustrating, but if you know why your dog is doing it, you can work on encouraging him to release this energy in other ways. This leads to a happier hound and human.
Dogs chew their beds for a number of reasons, including:
- They’re young. Teething puppies often go through a phase where they tear apart their dog beds. Their aching little teeth are driving them crazy! Grab a puppy teething toy to lessen some of your dog’s bed-chewing action.
- They’re rough. Some dogs are simply rougher on items than others, whether it’s tearing through toys and chews with gusto or letting loose on a bed. Toys for aggressive chewers are best for these doggos, as it redirects your floof’s focus to an appropriate outlet.
- They’re nervous. Nervousness or separation anxiety can be another source of destructive chewing behavior. While a chew-resistant dog bed can stop a nervous dog from destroying items, it’s still important that the owner address the underlying root cause of the nervous chewing.
- They’re bored. Dogs may chew because they are bored, and their beds end up being the closest thing around. Try walking your dog more often and providing them with mental enrichment activities, such as treat dispensing toys to challenge them mentally and prevent boredom.
There’s No Such Thing As a Completely Indestructible Dog Bed
Many manufacturers will boast that their dog beds are indestructible and chew-proof. But in reality, there is no such thing as a 100% indestructible dog bed.
With enough focused time and effort, most dogs are capable of destroying virtually any bed. After all, most beds are made of soft fabric and materials that are comfortable to lie on.
You might be able to find a truly indestructible dog bed made of pure metal or wood, but how comfortable would that be?
The only way to really ensure that your dog does not destroy his bed is to monitor him, redirect his bed chewing to an appropriate outlet (like a chew toy), and make the bed unavailable when you aren’t around to redirect him.
How to Stop Your Dog from Chewing the Bed: Redirecting Your Canine’s Desire to Chomp!
Is your dog chomping up his bed? Here’s how you can work on redirecting that chewing behavior.
Keep in mind that chewing is a natural behavior for dogs.
Your goal should not be to prevent your dog from chewing at all, but instead should be geared towards teaching your dog what objects are appropriate for chewing and which are not.
Here are some simple steps for how to redirect a dog’s chewing:
- Don’t reprimand. While some dogs may respond to a firm “no”, other dogs will simply be invigorated by your attention. After all, if they are bored and now suddenly you are showering them with attention (even negative attention), then they’ve won!
- Redirect to a toy or chew. Ignore your dog’s bed biting and instead take out a tasty chew or a fun toy and encourage your dog to come over to you and do a swap.
- When your dog grabs the toy or chew, offer lots of praise and treats! Reward your dog for making the right choice by lavishing praise, cuddles, and goodies. Training treats come in handy for on-the-fly rewards.
- Continue to reward your dog for choosing toys and chews over his bed. It’s important to continue monitoring your dog and reward him whenever you see him engage with his chew or toy. If you won’t be home or will be too busy to keep an eye on him, then simply remove the bed from your dog’s area until your attention is available. This way, he will not reinforce the unwanted bed-biting habit.
While your dog might continue to chew at his bed because of instilling a bad habit, with enough redirection and positive reinforcement, he should eventually learn that his chews and toys are for chomping – not his bed!
If you purchase a pricey bed and want to see it last more than 48 hours while you work on redirecting your dog’s destructive chewing behavior, you can always crate train your dog and have him in the crate when you are away or unavailable to redirect his chewing.
Another option — as mentioned above — is simply to remove the bed when you are out of the house.
Some owners may consider experimenting with anti-chew sprays to keep their dogs’ teeth off of the bed.
While some heavy chewers may be deterred by anti-chew dog spray, plenty of others seem totally unfazed by the bitter sprays. Some dogs even like the taste!
On top of that, making your dog’s bed a sticky spot your dog avoids kind of contradicts the purpose of buying your pup a bed, doesn’t it?
And of course, biting isn’t the only way that a destructive dog can destroy a bed. Digging is always an option too, and chew spray won’t help in that regard.
Does Your Dog Need More Stimulation?
While opting for a more durable dog bed is always a good idea, it’s also smart to consider why your excessive chewer is chomping so much.
Many dogs resort to chewing their bed when they’re bored. Ask yourself this:
- Does my dog get enough daily outdoor exercise, like walks or games of fetch? A lack of exercise isn’t only bad for your dog’s body, as it can also affect his mental health, leading to frustration. If your schedule is too booked to squeeze in more exercise, hire a dog walker or send your four-footer to doggy daycare to burn off extra steam.
- Is my dog being mentally stimulated and challenged? Dogs need more than just physical exercise. Consider incorporating interactive dog toys, and frozen dog toys to keep your canine companion occupied. For super smart sniffers, consider a brain game like a puzzle toy. Oh, and for a super tough chewer, indestructible dog toys for aggressive chewers aren’t a bad idea either!
- Have I provided my dog with long-lasting dog chews so that he has a safe and healthy way to satisfy his chewing instinct? Remember: chewing is a natural behavior for both puppies and adult dogs.
- How much time do I spend training my dog? Some dogs – especially those smarty-pants pups – will really benefit a lot from engaging in dog games and sports like nosework, agility, flyball, skijoring, etc. Consider joining a local dog sports chapter to stimulate your pup and build your bond!
Indestructible Dog Beds: FAQ
Frustrated by your dog chewing up his bed? You’re not alone — it’s actually a super common problem! And that means many owners dealing with this issue have similar questions. We’ve answered some of the most common ones below to help you work through this challenge.
What kind of dog bed can a dog not chew up?
Any dog bed can be destroyed if your dog is determined enough, but the best chew-proof dog beds tend to be made with thick, ultra-durable materials like cordura, canvas, and PVC. They also tend to have extra layers and double stitching.
Finding a bed with a lightweight aluminum frame is also recommended if you’re looking at elevated styles, as the legs aren’t chewable yet the bed remains easy to move around for cleaning. These high-quality materials cost more, but in the long run, it’s more affordable than buying a complete replacement every time your dog ruins his bed.
How do you stop dogs from chewing on beds?
The best way to stop your dog from chewing on his bed is to redirect his chewing behavior to an appropriate outlet (like a chew toy) and ensure he’s getting enough mental and physical stimulation.
Why do dogs rip up their beds?
Dogs will often rip up their beds when there is nothing else fun around to rip up. They may also destroy their bed due to frustration and boredom, so make sure to increase your dog’s access to daily enrichment through the use of chews, shredding activities, puzzle toys, and more frequent sniff-based walks.

I didn’t find anything remotely strong enough for my pup (7mths) still looking through!?! I’m looking for something for an extremely destructive animal who loves dragging her bed through the “Doggie Door ” to the outside during the dead of winter thru the hottest summer days(It seems to be for her comfort! She’ll drag on the ground, and put wherever she wants it: In the snow for the sunshine; In the summertime dragging to the shade)!?! Help!!! I’ve gone through 5 beds beds so far and I just got her recently!?! She’s the 3rd APB baby I’ve had and my first Girl baby! So, if anyone out there, knows a manufacturer who does make stronger beds than these,(doesn’t cost an arm and two legs), please keep me in mind!?!
